What to expect from DTNA’s new facility A new plant is required to put the latest technology and innovation at DTNA's fingertips, according to O’Leary, as gutting an existing plant and reconfiguring it with new technology would be “difficult,” he said. Instead, DTNA will work from a blank sheet of paper to build a facility designed with the future in mind. The new facility will accommodate a “digital backbone” that DTNA will build its future around. This includes “advanced production technologies and flexible manufacturing systems that will support future innovation, quality, efficiency, and operational resilience,” according to a DTNA press release. “We want to have the best, most modern plants out there because we know that will ultimately give us the best cost position, which ultimately is a huge part of the TCO equation, which is something that every customer that we sell to takes very seriously,” O’Leary said. The facility will also be outfitted with all-new equipment, which will contribute to a safer manufacturing process while ensuring higher-quality products and more efficiently, Jeff Allen, DTNA SVP of operations, said on the call. Ultimately, Allen’s goal for the new facility is efficiency, and in a market that operates on peaks and troughs, freight recessions and high demand, and pendulum swings from electric powertrains to traditional engines, having an efficient manufacturing facility also requires flexibility. Global demand for autonomous mobile robots, or AMRs, is again on the rise, propelled by labor costs and shortages, as well as the need for greater operational flexibility and speed. At the same time, the technology continues to evolve, as AMRs become smarter and more nimble. The global market for autonomous mobile robots will grow from nearly $5 billion in 2024 to $14 billion in 2030, predicted Interact Analysis. While the market slowed immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic, it shows signs of a strong recovery. Similarly, ABI Research has forecast that the mobile robot market could expand from $33 billion in 2026 to $68.9 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.2%. It said that AMRs account for half of that total. Automated and semi-automated forklifts can be easily integrated into existing warehouse and factory workflows, say suppliers. For those more willing to invest in infrastructure, the shuttles in automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) offer dense space utilization and scalability. Teamsters sue California DMV over driverless truck rules Teamsters California announced that it is suing the state Department of Motor Vehicles over new regulations allowing companies to seek permits to test and deploy driverless heavy-duty trucks. Filed Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court, the lawsuit alleges the DMV failed to conduct a legally required economic review and did not give the public enough information about the rules' potential effects on jobs and safety. Those regulations apply to autonomous commercial vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds. According to Teamsters California, the rules should have undergone a more extensive review because their economic impact could exceed $50 million during the first year. Uber and Wayve’s partnership to bring autonomous rides to London has moved forward after Transport for London (TfL) granted Private Hire Vehicle licences to a number of Wayve’s autonomous, all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles. The licences complete the “triple-lock” requirement for private hire trips, under which operator, driver and vehicle must all hold licences with the same authority. The vehicles, fitted with the Wayve AI Driver, surround cameras and radar, will operate under the Government’s AV Trialling Code of Practice and Uber’s TfL operator licence, with a trained, TfL-licensed driver onboard to oversee each trip. More than 100,000 Londoners have signed up to Uber’s Interest List in the past eight weeks, with select riders getting early access this summer ahead of full launch. Wayve’s AI-first approach, known as AV2.0, moves beyond traditional AV systems reliant on HD maps or geofenced domains, learning instead from experience to adapt to new roads. Trained on UK roads since 2018, the technology has been tested across more than 500 cities worldwide, while Uber says it now works with more than 30 AV partners as part of a hybrid network of vehicles and drivers. Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) received approval to build a new greenfield truck manufacturing facility in the United States. Construction is expected to begin by the end of ’26 and production targeted for late ’29. DTNA has not yet disclosed the location, investment amount, production capacity, or which truck models will be built there. However, President and CEO John O’Leary said the company expects the purpose-built facility to become the largest U.S. truck manufacturing plant when complete. The new DTNA U.S. truck plant will expand manufacturing capacity for vocational and on-highway vehicles and is being designed around flexible production systems, advanced manufacturing technology, and the ability to respond to changing vehicle and market requirements. A Greenfield Plant Provides a ‘Blank Canvas’ DTNA has been considering a new greenfield manufacturing facility for several years, according to O’Leary and Jeff Allen, senior vice president of operations at DTNA. Unlike an existing facility that must be reconfigured around established assembly lines and infrastructure, O’Leary said a purpose-built plant gives DTNA an opportunity to incorporate new manufacturing processes from the beginning. “We also feel that a purpose-built facility, unlike most of our other ones that we have, really gives us a blank canvas to add capacity and build flexibility into our operations from day one,” O’Leary said. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is facing a legal challenge from the Teamsters over the way the agency rolled out approval for self-driving commercial trucks. On 5 August, during its Q2 earnings, Uber announced a commitment of more than US$10bn to its robotaxi aggregator strategy over the next few years, and it took pains to insist Waymo remains a “very, very important partner” despite the two companies actively winding down their partnership. Shares fell 4.8% anyway, after Uber’s third-quarter profit forecast came in below Wall Street expectations. During the call, Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi framed the spending as a sign of strength rather than pressure and claimed Uber’s record US$2.8bn in quarterly free cash flow (and US$10.1bn over the trailing 12 months) gives it room to fund autonomous vehicle partners as they scale. It is moving quickly to ramp these partnerships into commercial services, of which seven are already live in various global cities. Khosrowshahi reiterated the company’s plans to reach as many as 15 by year-end, and 28 by 2028. The company’s best-known and arguably most prestigious partnership is—was—with Waymo, but tensions between the two companies have been readily apparent for months. Waymo quietly wound down its Phoenix robotaxi and food delivery arrangements with Uber in May 2026 and notified the company of plans to launch its own app in Austin and Atlanta from January 2028. This would effectively end exclusivity in both cities once the current contract lapses in May of that year. Federal authorities partnered with law enforcement in four states for an operation targeting “illegal, unvetted drivers and unsafe vehicles.” On August 4, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) released results from Operation Highway Shield, which took place July 28 — 30, 2026, in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio. The operation involved state police agencies, inspectors from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) â Teamsters California sued the Golden State on Wednesday over plans to allow autonomous commercial trucks on Golden State highways. The union, representing over 250,000 people in several industries, claims the Department of Motor Vehicles has ignored public concern and the California Administrative Procedure Act, opting instead to accelerate regulations allowing fully autonomous, commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds on public roads. It plans on enacting those regulations without a proper economic analysis needed for such a major rule. The tweaked automated vehicle regulations also would make small changes to existing rules allowing the testing of light-duty autonomous vehicles, like robotaxis.
