Aseon Labs announced it has raised $10 million in seed funding to accelerate the deployment of its decentralized network of robotic micro-depots for autonomous vehicle fleets. The round was led by Crane Venture Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Expa, Robin Hood Ventures, and Founders Capital. The round also included investments from Adrian Aoun, Immad Akhund, Rajat Suri, and operators and founding team members from Anthropic, Nuro, Turo, Revolut, and other companies across mobility, AI, and infrastructure. Aseon is building a distributed network of robotic pit stops designed to help autonomous vehicles charge, clean, inspect, and reset within their operating zones. The company said this approach can reduce fleet downtime, improve utilization, and help vehicles return to revenue-generating service faster. The company is addressing one of the key infrastructure bottlenecks facing autonomous vehicle fleets. Traditional centralized depots can take one to two years to secure, permit, and build, often requiring high-voltage electrical infrastructure and extensive site development. Aseon said its robotic micro-depots can be deployed in as little as one to two days. By placing servicing infrastructure closer to where vehicles operate, Aseon’s network is designed to help fleets launch in new markets more quickly, expand existing operating zones, and serve areas where large centralized depots may be impractical or unavailable. Aseon was founded by the team behind Pushme, a battery-swapping infrastructure network that expanded to more than 5,000 locations across 40 markets and was acquired by Tier Mobility. Tesla has begun testing a production version of its Cybercab that has two seats, but no steering wheel or pedals, in Austin, Texas. For now, the testing is being done with a safety monitor in the right passenger seat, according to a video posted on X, the social media platform owned by the electric car maker’s CEO Elon Musk. This test is happening nearly two years after Tesla revealed the design of the Cybercab, which is meant to be a fully autonomous robotaxi that can be hailed through Tesla’s app. Roughly a year ago, Tesla began testing a Tesla Robotaxi service in Austin with Model Y SUVs that have, at times, used safety monitors. Tesla has been testing prototype versions of the Cybercab, equipped with a steering wheel and pedals, in a number of cities around the United States in recent weeks. It has also been parking hundreds of the vehicles in parking lots in some of those cities, sparking speculation that the company was finally going to launch a truly scaled-up robotaxi network. One of the hurdles to realizing that idea is likely about to be removed. Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed a proposal that would not mandate brake pedals in “vehicles designed to be driven exclusively by automated driving systems.” The proposal is still in the public comment period, but it is expected to go through later this year. Marine Corps inks first contract for autonomous ground vehicle production A nearly $20 million contract aims to integrate autonomous ground vehicles in the service’s ground based air defense missions. The Marine Corps will pay Overland AI $19.7 million to produce more than a dozen autonomous ground vehicles by early 2027. The vehicles, due to be delivered in about nine months, will be part of the Marine Air Defense Integrated Systems program, which is part of the service’s counterdrone approach, and support resupply missions. “Ground autonomy matters now more than ever. We're seeing the proliferation of uncrewed ground vehicles in conflicts like the one in Ukraine, and tech maturity is really there,” Byron Boots, Overland AI’s CEO told reporters. “We're registering extremely high demand from U.S. operational units who want to incorporate this technology into their concepts of operation.” Overland recently demonstrated its autonomous offerings with the Marine Corps on a prototype for the Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires, or ROGUE Fires, program. The robot vehicle is expected to integrate with existing Marine Corps platforms, such as the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV. “We're going to start by integrating the [autonomous ground] vehicle into the system, providing a resupply capability for the other vehicles…and we may build on it from there,” Boots said. Uber and Waymo have parted ways in the major US market of Phoenix. TechCrunch reported that the two transportation companies ended their almost three-year relationship in that city in May. Waymo will still be offering rides with its autonomous vehicle fleet in Phoenix through its own app. The company has a long history in the city, using its streets as a proving ground before launching public rides in 2020. "After hundreds of thousands of trips with Uber, we have integrated these vehicles back into our Phoenix fleet, where they will continue to serve riders through Waymo, including our public transit integration with Via, and delivery with DoorDash," Waymo told TC. The bigger change emerging out of this dissolved partnership seems to be on the side of Uber, which has been building its own operations in autonomous vehicles. The company has worked with several different brands, from Avride to WeRide, to offer robotaxi rides around the globe. And now that Uber is involved in making its own autonomous cars thanks to a collaboration with Lucid and Neuro, the business may be looking to replace more of those piecemeal arrangements in favor of using its own designs.

The recent optimism toward the stock is easy to understand. What's harder to pin down, however, is what Uber actually owns in the autonomous race. Here is the part the robotaxi excitement tends to gloss over: Uber doesn't build the cars, doesn't write the self-driving software, and doesn't own the vehicles carrying its riders. Its plan is to be the app that books the trip, whoever's autonomous car shows up. That asset-light approach could be Uber's biggest advantage in autonomy -- or its biggest vulnerability, depending on how the next few years unfold. A platform, not a fleet Uber's pitch to investors and autonomous-car manufacturers is about aggregation. It has reportedly signed up about 30 autonomous partners -- robotaxi developers, delivery-bot makers, and self-driving trucking firms -- and wants to be the marketplace where that capacity meets demand. The early traction backs up the idea: Uber recently said autonomous trips on its platform grew about tenfold over the past year, and management is targeting driverless service in up to 15 cities by the end of 2026. Over the weekend, the release of the official Cybercab First Responder Interaction Plan peeled back the layers on how the vehicle performs driverless operations. Interestingly, the documentation refers to the car as the "Cybercab Robotaxi," hammering home exactly what this machine was built to do. The emergency guide explicitly and repeatedly classifies the Cybercab as completely driverless, showing that Tesla is sticking to its guns about deploying it without a steering wheel or pedals. Even so, Tesla previously said it would start rolling out Cybercabs with steering wheels and pedals if regulators required them. This lines up with a broader shift in the regulatory landscape, especially since NHTSA recently stopped requiring traditional brake pedals on autonomous vehicles. Cybercab’s Level 4 Autonomy According to the new emergency handbook, the vehicle is equipped with an SAE Level 4 'Autonomous Mode.' This comes after Tesla self-certified FSD-driven vehicles as Level 4 autonomy-compliant under a new Texas law. GM has stopped trying to win the robotaxi war on city streets. Its new autonomy bet is more ordinary, and possibly more useful: sell eyes-off driving to people who already buy Cadillacs. General Motors is trying to turn the Cruise collapse into a product you can actually buy. According to Business Insider, GM's latest autonomous-vehicle push is now led by Rashed Haq, its vice president of autonomous vehicles, and the first target is eyes-off highway driving in the Cadillac Escalade IQ by 2028. That is a very different story from the one GM was selling a few years ago. Cruise was supposed to build fleets of driverless cars, charge for rides, and give GM a mobility business beyond selling vehicles. Instead, GM stopped funding Cruise's robotaxi work in December 2024 after years of losses, regulatory damage, and the ugly aftermath of a 2023 San Francisco crash. The Associated Press reported at the time that Cruise had piled up more than $10 billion in operating losses while producing less than $500 million in revenue, based on GM shareholder reports filed with the SEC. You don't need to be sentimental about that pivot. The robotaxi dream consumed cash, patience, and political goodwill.
