Waymo has expanded its autonomous vehicle service area in Houston to nearly 50 square miles, adding neighborhoods like EaDo, the Texas Medical Center and Northeast Houston, the company announced. The expansion includes NRG Stadium, which is set to host hundreds of thousands of fans for FIFA World Cup festivities in June and July. The ride-hailing service first opened to the public in Houston in February, alongside launches in Dallas and San Antonio. With its curvaceous integrated fenders, hidden headlights, waterfall grille, and long, low, wide proportions, the Y-Job looks like a car born two decades later. That was exactly the point. Today, The Y-Job is what we recognize as the industryâs very first example of a concept car, a prototype vehicle created by automotive designers to showcase their vision of the future. âBorn in 1938 to give the stylist a tool for advanced research comparable to the laboratory and the proving ground used by the scientist and engineer, the dream car has become a world famous symbol of the American publicâs ever growing fascination with the life it can expect in the future,â GM noted in a 1956 press release. The story began in October 2025, when Redwing, a new-generation autonomous ocean glider, slipped beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. Deployed by the Teledyne Webb Research team, the Sentinel Mission aimed to achieve the first circumnavigation of the globe by an autonomous underwater vehicle. Redwing is a Slocum Sentinel glider, a long-endurance autonomous platform combining low power consumption, high endurance, and flexible sensor integration. It measures temperature, salinity, and detects marine animals that are tagged with acoustic sources. The Sentinel Mission project aimed to demonstrate how autonomous technologies can transform global ocean observing. It is led by Teledyne Webb Research in collaboration with Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership and the US Integrated Ocean Observing System, and supported by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Like thousands of ocean observing platforms, Redwing contributes to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)—a program co-sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). GOOS provides leadership for a global system of sustained ocean observations, coordinating a network of nearly 9,000 instruments operated by 64 countries. The state that has been trying to build high-speed rail since 2008 is now looking at high-speed buses. The California Department of Transportation, known locally as Caltrans, said it is exploring how the buses could operate along the state’s freeways at up to 140 mph. To do so, dedicated lanes would need to be built to isolate the high-speed buses from other traffic, according to a 2025 Caltrans research report. Advanced safety technologies would also be essential. A driver could not be expected to respond quickly and effectively at high speeds, so autonomous vehicle systems such as lane-keeping and automatic emergency braking would be necessary, according to the report. “Automation can help maintain safe headways, ensure smooth steering through curves, and keep the vehicle operating within safe limits at all times,” the report states. Infrastructure sensors, other vehicles or traffic control centers could warn buses by using vehicle-to-everything, or V2X, technology. V2X enables vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure. A typical intercity bus would create drag and instability at such high speeds, and could react poorly in crosswinds, the research report says. Aerodynamic improvements would address these issues and reduce fuel consumption. One estimate, presented during a recent Caltrans webinar, projected travel time between San Francisco and Los Angeles at a little over three hours at about 120 mph. The high-speed rail line aims for a two-hour, 40-minute trip when completed. Future high-speed bus routes could also include San Diego and Sacramento, California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Caltrans did not provide a cost estimate, according to ABC7 News. Caltrans said in a statement to ABC7 News that the high-speed bus concept “remains exploratory.” But its research report concluded that “the concept of a 120 mph ‘freeway bullet bus’ is not science fiction.”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Self-driving car company Waymo has confirmed it is mapping roads in parts of Northern Virginia, even though the company said it does not currently have plans to launch a ride-hailing service in Virginia. In a statement to WUSA9, Waymo said the mapping work is happening in Alexandria and Arlington as part of early preparations in case Virginia lawmakers eventually authorize fully autonomous ride-hailing. “We are actively working to bring the safety and mobility benefits of our service to the public in Washington, D.C.,” Waymo officials said. “We are currently mapping in Northern Virginia as an important preparatory step should the Commonwealth authorize fully autonomous ride-hailing, but we do not currently have plans for a service in Virginia.” The company said mapping involves trained specialists manually driving vehicles through a specific area. Waymo officials said it is also engaging with state and city officials. The update comes as Waymo continues working toward launching its autonomous ride-hailing service in the District. Company officials said it has already mapped every ward in Washington, D.C., and has autonomously driven hundreds of thousands of miles in the city.
