Ford, though, has at least one connected vehicle feature that puts real power in the hands of owners: a remote kill switch. Here's how this works. Say someone steals your car. You've left the key in it, and suddenly the car is gone. If you still have your phone and you have the Ford Pass app, you can stop the car dead in its tracks at the touch of a button. The function is a part of the Ford Security package, which first debuted on the 2024 F-Series pickups. The newest expansion of that package includes the kill switch feature on the following models: the 2026 Expedition, 2026 Bronco Sport, and 2026 Mustang Mach-E. As an added bonus, the software even works in the situation above: should your key still be left in the car, you can remotely shut down the engine. After you've shut down your car, there's no cheating. Even if someone else has the key, they won't be able to start your car without deactivating the kill switch inside the Ford Pass app. It adds a second layer of redundancy to your car's security system. This works via a deactivation code entered on your phone, but as another layer of redundancy, owners can also enter it on the car's dash. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband was charged with a misdemeanor hit-and-run on Friday, weeks after he allegedly crashed into an unoccupied parked car and left the scene. Paul Pelosi, 86, was charged under a California state law that requires drivers involved in collisions resulting in property damage to stop and provide their driver’s license and vehicle registration information, according to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office. He was also charged with making an unlawful turn, prosecutors said. He is expected to appear in Napa County Superior Court on Aug. 14. Pelosi was allegedly driving his brown convertible in Yountville, Calif., on July 3 when he struck a car that was legally parked on the side of the road. He stopped briefly but then drove away. No injuries were reported. Prosecutors said that there was no evidence Pelosi had alcohol in his system at the time. He was not arrested during the incident. “Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” a spokesperson for the Pelosi family told The Hill in a statement the day after the crash. “Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.” The Associated Press previously reported that Pelosi was referred to the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine whether he can continue to drive, a process that is common for older drivers. The district attorney’s office noted that it can only ask a court to prohibit someone from driving as a condition of probation, which can be up to one year for a misdemeanor hit-and-run. Europe's congestion is costing fleets millions in wasted fuel, new Geotab data reveals London ranks near bottom for efficiency as stop-start traffic pushes vehicle fuel consumption to the highest level in Geotab study LONDON, July 17, 2026 - Geotab, a global leader in connected vehicle and asset management solutions, today revealed that more than 1.58 million litres of fuel were burned while Geotab-connected vehicles sat stationary in traffic across Europe's major capitals during 2025. Across the vehicles analysed, idle fuel waste reached an estimated €2.6 million over twelve months. The findings form part of Geotab's European Urban Freight Efficiency Index, which analysed a full year of connected vehicle data across seven major capitals: London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin, Rome, Paris and Madrid. The €2.6 million figure reflects 2025's average European fuel prices. European diesel has risen above €2 per litre in the first half of 2026, a 30% increase triggered by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. These fuel prices would bring the cost of the same volume of idle waste to approximately €3.6 million. Across the seven cities in the study, the relationship between congestion and fuel efficiency diverges sharply depending on how traffic moves, not just how much of it there is. The most congested city is not necessarily the one costing fleets the most in fuel. London represents one of the most challenging operating environments for fuel efficiency among the seven cities. Ranked sixth (out of seven) in the Index, its stop-start traffic patterns prevent engines from reaching operating temperature, while its unpredictability compounds the problem. London recorded the highest passenger vehicle fuel consumption of any city analysed, at 15.60 litres per 100 kilometres, almost two-and-a-half times higher than Paris. Following the recent tragic accident in mid-June, when a Tesla Model 3 crashed into a home, preliminary findings from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) show that the driver overrode FSD. The driver, 44-year-old Michael Butler, claimed that the vehicle was running on FSD and that it autonomously accelerated into the home, resulting in the death of 76-year-old Martha Avila. However, the investigation has now confirmed that the driver overrode the vehicle’s speed by pressing the accelerator pedal. Manual Override A common misunderstanding in reporting is that FSD can override human input. In reality, FSD instantly yields to human intervention. However, due to the inconsistent nature of how FSD deals with human input, we can understand how casual drivers can be confused. For example, tugging on the steering wheel or hitting the brake pedal disengages FSD entirely. However, pressing the accelerator pedal keeps FSD engaged, with the human controlling the vehicle’s speed, while FSD continues to steer. This used to be even more confusing just a year or two ago. Back then, overriding the steering wheel would kick the vehicle into Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, disabling auto steer, but the vehicle would still control its speed. In the case of the crash in Katy, Texas, the NTSB retrieved electronic data confirming that Butler pressed the accelerator pedal down completely, likely meaning to tap the brake, and when the vehicle accelerated, he doubled down and pressed the pedal down completely. At that point, the driver was now choosing the vehicle’s speed, although FSD remained active. The software yielded control as engineered, allowing the driver to manually propel the Model 3 to speeds exceeding 70 mph within a 30-mph residential zone. Stellantis, which owns Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler, has announced that it will soon be making numerous connected services free for 10 years. Free trials are nothing new. In fact, they’re an essential component in helping automakers rationalize the pivot to connected features. Nobody would want to pay for formerly standard equipment as part of recurring fees. By making them temporarily free, automakers can avoid consumer backlash while also normalizing the subscription trend. As a convenient byproduct, the trial phase also lets the customer know what they’re missing once it lapses — encouraging the likelihood that they’ll re-open their wallets to get those services back. But those free periods typically don’t last more than a year or three, making Stellantis’ 10-year grace period rather unique. According to the automaker, the plan is to update the “Connect One” connected services package to incorporate more features and a longer grace period. This will include things like remote start, remote entry, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, service scheduling, vehicle health reports, remote recall alerts, automatic emergency calling, and several vehicle apps available via the in-vehicle marketplace (e.g. games). However, the brunt of that will still be tied to using a connected phone app (above) and should eventually default to you having to pay a monthly subscription.
