Cybersecurity expert DENNIS DESMOND explains how to stay safe in an era of ‘connected cars’ collecting data. Australia’s spy agency has issued a stark warning to politicians and public servants: do not discuss sensitive or classified information in vehicles. Speaking at senate estimates, ASIO Deputy Director-General Lisa Alonso Love said the warning concerned “any vehicle, whether it’s connected or not”. But she added that “connected vehicles” may come with additional risks for data collection. Her advice was that classified conversations should occur only in properly secured locations, not while travelling. The warning came after seven models of Chinese electric vehicles were added to the list of taxpayer-funded cars available to federal politicians, representing 30 per cent of the vehicles now available under the parliamentarian vehicle scheme. But this is not just a problem with electric cars, nor cars manufactured in China. Connected vehicles of any kind come with several privacy and national security risks. What are ‘connected cars’? According to the Australian Signals Directorate, any vehicle that is connected to the internet, either through an embedded SIM card or a paired smartphone, can be considered a connected vehicle. Almost all major cars sold in Australia with “connected services” collect and transmit driver and passenger data to the vehicle manufacturer. A study by consulting firm McKinsey found 50% of cars on the road in 2021 had internet connections and predicted the number will rise to 95 per cent by 2030. Data is collected and stored both on vehicle and offshore. For example, Great Wall Motor’s policy states its data is transmitted to Singapore but is available for analysis in China. What data do these cars collect? Connected vehicles are packed with sensors: in the seats, the dashboard, the engine, the steering wheel. Many also have additional driver-facing cameras plus external cameras.

Robots navigating factory floors, drones inspecting power lines, and autonomous vehicles reading traffic all share the same constraint: They need to act in milliseconds. Sending data to a distant computing facility and waiting for a response takes too long. For machines operating in the physical world, that delay can mean a missed obstacle, a wrong turn or a failed inspection. The Robot Report noted that physical artificial intelligence systems can’t depend on remote computing for real-time decisioning. That problem has no software fix. It requires different infrastructure, built closer to where machines operate. That gap is what Nvidia and T-Mobile are moving to fill. Working with Nokia, the two companies are running computing directly through cell tower infrastructure. Instead of routing data to a remote facility, the system processes it at the tower, near where the robot or vehicle operates. T-Mobile was the first U.S. carrier to run the system in a live pilot. T-Mobile’s Tower AI Is Already on the Job Physical AI deployments have been moving out of controlled environments and into live industrial settings. Robots update their behavior on the fly. Drones reroute around unexpected obstacles. None of that can wait. Sending data back and forth to a remote facility introduces delays that make the system unreliable. The issue isn’t bandwidth. It’s distance. Computing needs to happen closer to the machine. Carriers are positioned to provide that. They already own tower infrastructure nationwide. T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan said the company built its network for exactly this requirement. But the decisions made to build vehicles in that country are coming back to bite them. The US is imposing bans on cars from China that will soon go into effect, and while the idea was to keep Chinese brands out of the US, domestic brands operating in China are also subject to the new rules. And now, the best-selling model from Lincoln is one of those that will need special permission if Ford wants to keep selling it here. Connected Car Software Ban Starts Soon A ban on most connected car software installed on vehicles built in China was first made law in January 2025, still under the Biden administration. The worry was that vehicles could be collecting data on American owners, and even on US Government facilities. The bans were set to go into effect with software for model year 2027 and hardware for 2030, and the Trump administration kept them in place. For model year 2024, Ford moved production of the Lincoln Nautilus from a plant in Ontario, Canada, to a factory in China. It has been importing every Nautilus from there since, and that added up to 33,744 units last year, a figure that made it the brand's bestseller by around 8,000 vehicles. Come January, when Ford wants to start importing 2027 model year Nautilus SUVs from China, it won't be able to. Unless, that is, it gets approval from the US Commerce Department. Using INRIX mobility data, we analyzed traffic performance within a one-mile radius of seven stadiums that hosted matches during the tournament’s first three days. The results reveal how event timing, venue location, and fan travel patterns influenced congestion levels, providing an early look at the transportation impacts of one of the world’s largest sporting events. June 12, 2026 – SoFi Stadium – Los Angeles, CA – 6:00pm Kickoff In the one-mile radius around SoFi stadium traffic speeds began to fall around 1:00pm, two hours before kickoff time. By the 3:00pm and 4:00pm hours, traffic had slowed about 20% versus normal Friday traffic, to 13.5 mph. Traffic speeds began to rise yet fell significantly after the event during the 8:00pm hour, when travel speeds plummeted 30% versus normal to 12.6 mph. Traffic recovered to normal around the stadium by the 11:00pm hour. The rules include a ban on most Chinese-developed and -maintained software and cover companies with significant Chinese ownership. Lawmakers have proposed making the rules even tougher. They were adopted in January 2025 under President Joe Biden, based on national security concerns linked to the ability of vehicles to collect sensitive data on American owners, and have been kept in place under the Trump administration.
