Android <b>Auto's</b> connection nightmare may finally be over

Google has pushed out a Play Services update that hopes to solve some nagging connection issues experienced by a number of Android Auto issues. These fixes will hopefully be a salve for anyone who's had connection issues with Android Auto since around March of this year, though it remains to be seen whether this is a cure-all. Android Auto is useless without a connection Android Auto has been suffering from connection issues for a lot of people since the Samsung Galaxy S26 launch in March of this year. While initially spotted mostly on Samsung's phones, the problem soon spread to other devices as well, including Google's own Pixel devices. There have been a number of updates since then, but for some, the same connection issues have continued. Thankfully, Google isn't giving up, as this update makes clear. The changelog is fairly sparse, listing just "bug fixes for Device Connections related services", and not detailing what those particular fixes are. But it's easy to read between the lines that Android Auto's connection continues to be a problem. The issue seems to affect both wired and wireless connections, affects different brands and builds of car, and even seems to impact people who'd previously used the same phone, cable, and port as before. Hopefully, this update will clear up those problems. Unfortunately, connection issues are always going to be a problem for Android Auto. The entire system works on a tether, and whether you're using a wired or wireless connection, the bitter truth is that those connections are going to have issues from time-to-time. Hyundai Motor and Kia have become the first major Korean companies to join Open Invention Network (OIN) 2.0, a patent non-aggression programme protecting open source software across automotive and technology sectors. The two automakers cite the growing role of Linux and open source technologies in software-defined vehicles, connected car platforms and cloud services as their rationale. OIN’s membership now exceeds 4,100 organisations, which collectively account for more than US$10tr in annual revenues and own more than three million patents and applications. On Facebook, the Pecan Park Flea Market Vendors Group posted an undated photo of a closure announcement from the market operators to vendors saying the new owners planned to develop an auto dealership on the property at 614 Pecan Park Road. The market will close Sept. 27, with vendors being allowed to remove items from the site through October. The property is at southwest Interstate 95 and Pecan Park Road, near a planned development of 1,000 acres of timberland at the northeast corner of the juncture for commercial, industrial and residential uses. In a sale recorded May 29, Butler Family Holdings LLLP purchased the property for $8.55 million from Pecan Park Marketplace Investors LTD. It’s an election year, and that means politicians are putting in extra work to pander to special interest groups they think will help them cross the finish line. If you’re looking to be elected in Michigan, there aren’t many interests more special than the automotive industry, and a good way to get the industry on your side is by going after the thing it fears the most: China. Now, if a pair of lawmakers get their way, Chinese-badged vehicles wouldn’t just be restricted from sale or import in the US, they’d also be banned from entering the country, even for a simple day trip from Canada or Mexico. Moves to protect the US auto industry are nothing new, and they’re popular across party lines. Former President Biden added an additional 100 percent import tariff on all Chinese-made cars during his term and then had the Department of Commerce draw up new rules—later implemented by the Trump administration—that banned the import of connected cars manufactured by companies owned by or with links to the Chinese government, starting in 2027. It’s possible to get authorization under those rules to import connected cars; last month, Volvo Cars got such permission to import its EX60, which would still have fallen foul of the regulations despite being built in Sweden, thanks to Volvo being part-owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding. In the show-floor demos, trained operators would ask their cars to change the climate settings, schedule a meeting after checking who’s available, and navigate to a destination based on inputs like ‘can you find me a good Italian restaurant?’ Seeing the oh-so-2026 label ‘AI’ added to voice control, we’re supposed to believe it possesses higher, human-adjacent powers compared with the voice control that’s been native to our cars for years, or indeed with Siri or Google Assistant. They also claim these systems can hold several conversations simultaneously with different people in the car. Certainly that should overcome a massive fail with every in-car voice assistant I’ve ever used. I start talking, and at the same time one of my family also pipes up, and the whole interaction falls on its backside. But this acknowledgement by AI developers that there are other occupants in the car shows they’re inventing a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. Why would my passenger hold a verbal tête-à-tête with the dashboard about reviews for a restaurant? They’d look on their phone. The only moment they’d talk to the car is at the end of the process when they’d found nearby parking and want it in the satnav. Essentially, it seems Volkswagen Group has quietly disabled the CarNet API (Application Programming Interface) for its We Connect service that allows users to control and read the data from its vehicles through independent software. What exactly does this mean? Essentially, users were able to have granular control over their data and actions, like when and how their cars were charged at home, compared to the basic features in the Volkswagen app. Now, that's all suddenly shut down. Private Control The biggest use cases were through the popular open-source home automation software, Home Assistant, and the open-source EV charging and energy management system openWB. Opinion: <b>Connected</b> motorcycles come at a steep cost

Some time spent with the Ultraviolette X-47 got me thinking about privacy and freedom in their most basic sense and how we might soon lose what little is left. Think about your current life and how much you’ve already willingly or unknowingly sacrificed. Your smartphone and the multiple apps on it know your location at all times, and they keep an accurate log of where you have been unless you’ve specifically turned that feature off. Your payment apps create a digital footprint of what you spend on and where you do it. Your social media presence captures an even more accurate portrait of what you like and dislike and, more or less, who you are as a person. All of this is data you do not control and, instead, you live with the hope that it will be respected and protected – even though deep down, you know that it mostly isn’t. There used to be a time, not so long ago, when a motorcycle was a tool of freedom. It was one of the few things that could take you as far as you wanted to go and let you keep that journey entirely to yourself if you so wished. One of the big downsides of EVs is that they do not yet offer that same unbridled freedom – a reliable public charging network that matches the existing fuel station network is still a distant dream. However, the sweeping shift to connected vehicles is my real concern. All new EVs, and a growing number of ICE vehicles, are now eSIM-enabled and constantly harvesting incredible amounts of data. This includes not only location and speed, but also things like accelerator opening, brake pressure, lean angles and individual wheel speeds.
