Australia’s domestic intelligence agency has cautioned politicians and government employees against discussing classified or sensitive matters inside vehicles, particularly those equipped with internet connectivity, due to the potential risk of surveillance and data collection. The warning was delivered during a Senate estimates hearing on Thursday evening, where senior officials from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) were questioned about the security implications of modern connected vehicles. As more Australians purchase cars that can connect to the internet, concerns are growing about how information generated inside those vehicles could be accessed, stored or transmitted. According to figures from Austroads, connected vehicles are expected to account for 93 per cent of all new vehicle sales by 2031. More than 1.2 million such vehicles were already operating on Australian roads by 2021. Connected vehicles typically use built-in SIM cards or pair with smartphones to access online services and communicate with external networks. These systems support a range of functions, including remote vehicle management, software updates delivered over the air, navigation services and advanced infotainment features. Some of these vehicles are available to federal parliamentarians through government-funded vehicle allowance programs, raising questions about whether they could present a security risk when used by elected representatives. When asked whether MPs should avoid vehicles manufactured in China, ASIO Deputy Director-General Lisa Alonso Love said the broader concern was not limited to any particular brand or country of origin. It is a story that has become familiar, with variations, to a significant number of Kia and Hyundai EV owners across the country are faced with charging problems (Auto Connected Car News reported on the issue first in the IONIQ 5 ) The culprit is a single electronic module, the Integrated Charging Control Unit — the ICCU — a component that manages the flow of energy between the high-voltage drive battery, the 12-volt auxiliary system, and the outside world when the car is plugged in. When it works, owners never think about it. When it doesn’t, their cars become, in the vernacular of owner forums, very expensive bricks. A Platform Problem The EV6, Kia’s award-winning electric crossover, and the EV9, its three-row electric flagship, both ride on the E-GMP architecture — the dedicated electric platform that Hyundai Motor Group developed to compete with Tesla and Volkswagen in the global EV market. It is, by most engineering assessments, a technically ambitious piece of work: 800-volt charging capability, wide-body proportions, and genuine range and performance credentials. But the E-GMP platform also brought the ICCU, and the ICCU, it has emerged, has a vulnerability. The unit can become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling. A damaged ICCU may not be able to charge the 12-volt battery, which can discharge gradually while the car is being driven, causing progressive reductions in power. If the driver ignores warnings associated with the condition and continues driving in reduced-power mode, the vehicle can eventually experience a complete loss of drive power. A complete loss of drive power, as federal regulators note tersely in recall documents, increases the risk of a crash. MPs and public servants have been warned not to discuss secret or sensitive matters while on the road, amid a global climate of escalating surveillance and cyber-warfare. ASIO deputy director-general Lisa Alonso Love gave the warning to a Senate Estimates hearing last night. "In relation to any vehicle, whether it's connected or not, we would suggest that members of parliament or public servants do not have conversations that contain sensitive or classified information," she said. While internet-connected cars are considered more vulnerable to electronic surveillance, Love said the risk was more widespread. "Obviously, a connected car may have other vectors to gather that information, but those conversations should only ever happen in places that are set up for classified conversations," she said. "We would say that people should be conscious of the things that they are discussing in vehicles, knowing that people may be able to get that information." A "connected" vehicle is one connected to the internet, such as through an inbuilt SIM card or a paired smartphone, according to government guidelines. This doesn't just mean electric vehicles, as most new cars are manufactured with some form of connection. A nine-month study into driverless heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) has identified hub-to-hub trunking and intermodal shuttle operations as the most viable starting points for early UK deployment. Since the project launched last year, it has carried out workshops, seminars and customer visits with operators across the freight sector, while engaging with every major European truck manufacturer, alongside the Department for Transport (DfT), the Department for Business and Trade, Transport Scotland, Logistics UK, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The study concludes that autonomous freight is moving rapidly from pilot projects into early commercial operation internationally, while the UK is approaching a key legislative milestone through implementation of the Automated Vehicles Act 2024. Volvo Cars, majority owned by China’s Geely Holding, said it received approval from the U.S. government allowing it to continue selling vehicles. In January 2025, President Joe Biden’s administration finalized rules effectively barring nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China. The rules included a ban on most Chinese-developed and maintained software that took effect in March 2026 for the 2027 model year and covered companies with significant Chinese ownership. Lawmakers have proposed making the rules even tougher. “Given our ownership Volvo Car USA was required to follow a process with the U.S. Department of Commerce to obtain a specific authorization for the continued import and sale of connected cars in the U.S.,” the company said. “With this specific authorization, Volvo Cars can continue its growth plans in the United States.” Volvo Cars sold 121,600 vehicles in the United States in 2025, down 2.9% from 2024. The Commerce Department did not respond to a request for comment. In September, Volvo Cars said it would begin producing a new hybrid model in the U.S. by the end of the decade. The new model will be designed for the U.S. market and help Volvo boost capacity utilization at its South Carolina plant. A new study finds that performance-focused vehicle advertising grew more prevalent between 2018 and 2022, even as speeding continued to claim tens of thousands of American lives. Research published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that 43 percent of vehicle advertisements airing in 2018, 2020 and 2022 emphasized speed, maneuverability, traction, stopping power or raw horsepower — and that the emphasis grew more pronounced over time. Speed was highlighted more than twice as often as safety. By 2022, only 3 percent of ads foregrounded safety at all, down from 11 percent four years earlier. Meanwhile, speeding killed 11,288 people on American roads in 2024, accounting for nearly 29 percent of all traffic deaths in the country. “Showing a stunt driver zooming around a tight turn in the rain might seem harmless,” said David Harkey, president of the IIHS. “But these ads reinforce our cultural obsession with speed. The fine print may caution that it’s a professional driver on a closed course, but the message they convey is that you can drive this way too.” The study, led by IIHS research scientist Amber Woods, analyzed more than 1,500 television commercials and more than 1,000 internet and social media ads. A team of 10 coders from the University of Virginia’s media studies department reviewed the material against a framework of 23 themes, from luxury and nostalgia to speed and traction. Results were weighted by advertising spending data from Nielsen Ad Intel, giving greater weight to ads that aired repeatedly. The findings complicate a comfortable industry assumption — that depicting a vehicle’s capabilities is simply good marketing rather than a public safety concern. WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) announced the Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island, MI. The bill prevents Chinese connected vehicles from entering the U.S., including through our neighbors to the north and south. This legislation is a significant step towards protecting our national security and the U.S. auto industry. The Chinese auto industry is heavily subsidized by the Chinese Communist Party, allowing them to undercut competitors and quickly flood new markets. We’ve seen this process play out rapidly in Europe and South America. In Mexico, Chinese vehicles have quickly gained roughly 15% market share. In January 2026, Canada announced a trade deal with China that will see Canada dramatically reduce tariffs on tens of thousands of Chinese vehicles. The threat of connected vehicles from China is now at both of our backyards, to the North and South. For years, Slotkin has made protecting the United States from the national security and economic threats posed by Chinese connected vehicles a priority. Most recently, she co-introduced the bipartisan Connected Vehicle Security Act of 2026 with Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH). This legislation effectively prevents Chinese vehicles – along with the hardware and software that support them – from accessing the U.S. market at every stage, from manufacture to import to sale.
