My aging 2015 car has one big problem: it doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I didn't really mind, as I could always connect my smartphone to the in-car audio using a cheap USB-C to 3.5mm adapter to keep the music playing, no matter what. That is, until I noticed that more and more of my smartphones were failing to work with my good old adapter. Everything worked fine when I used a Nothing Phone 1, but with the Samsung Z Fold 8? It doesn't want to know. A $20 adapter solved my problems overnight, and my wonderful Car Music playlist booms out wherever I drive once more — but why did the USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter stop working to begin with? Why your USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapter doesn't work Well, not with the latest smartphones The dreaded "USB device message not supported" isn't entirely new; Samsung users began reporting this issue back in 2020 with the Galaxy S20, and that wasn't the only phone flashing this message. But I'd been somehow getting away with the problem for years, not just on my beloved Nothing Phone 1, but a whole host of smartphones across that period. The problem is mixed: it's a phone problem, for sure, but it's also an adapter problem. In part, it starts because all USB-C to 3.5mm adapters and conversion cables look essentially the same from the outside: a plug at each end, wire between, and a tiny DAC somewhere in the process converting the digital signal into analog. But in some cases, the cheap ones are passive, requiring the phone's USB-C port to recognize the adapter's resistor configuration and support USB-C's Audio Adapter Accessory Mode. When it does, the phone routes analog audio through the USB-C connector. So, when the handshake does

Wialon unlocks direct OEM vehicle data Global fleet digitalisation vendor Wialon has announced a strategic expansion into OEM vehicle data, giving connected fleets a single source of truth by unifying information sourced directly from manufacturers. Through an integration with data aggregator High Mobility, and by leveraging its own middleware platform flespi, Wialon now allows partners and users to access telematics data for both passenger and commercial vehicles without fitting any aftermarket hardware, ensuring fleets keep full control over their own data. By building a reliable data flow from OEM equipment via High Mobility and flespi, Wialon gives fleet owners native, unrestricted access to vehicle data without a single wire being installed or a warranty being put at risk. The move lands as the EU Data Act, which becomes enforceable in September 2026, brings an end to manufacturers’ exclusive control over vehicle data. The legislation grants fleet owners the legal right to access data generated by their connected vehicles and to share it with third-party service providers of their choosing. In practice, this obliges OEMs to open up access to vehicle data, making it far simpler for fleets to adopt independent telematics platforms and to consolidate information from multiple manufacturers and aftermarket devices within a single system, such as Wialon. The development addresses a long-running source of friction within the logistics sector. Modern vehicles generate vast quantities of diagnostic and behavioural data, yet manufacturers have historically restricted access to it, charged hidden fees, or enforced vendor lock-in. This shift also comes at a time when the European automotive telematics market is forecast to grow from $22.5 billion in 2026 to $67.5 billion by 2034, at a compound annual growth rate of 14.7 per cent, underlining the rising commercial importance of accessible vehicle data. Wialon’s new bridge already covers more than 20

News Releases WASHINGTON, Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced a safety collaboration with the American Automobile Association (AAA), the foremost leader in roadside assistance, and HAAS Alert, the leader in connected vehicle safety, to deliver real-time digital alerts that warn approaching motorists when a Mazda customer is stopped on the roadside and has requested roadside assistance. Powered by AAA's Roadside Assistance Program and HAAS Alert's Safety Cloud® Protect service, the collaboration extends Mazda's commitment to safety beyond the vehicle itself – helping to protect Mazda drivers and passengers when they are most vulnerable. Mazda's approach to safety has long been guided by its Safety Philosophy, which prioritizes understanding real-world risk and designing systems that help mitigate harm before it occurs. While Mazda's award-winning lineup of crash avoidance and occupant protection technology continues to set the standard for what happens inside the vehicle, the collaboration with AAA and HAAS Alert helps address what happens outside of it - the moments after a roadside event, when a vehicle and its occupants are most vulnerable to being struck by an approaching motorist. When a Mazda customer requests roadside assistance through the MyMazda app or via a toll-free phone call, a local AAA-affiliated service provider is dispatched to the customer to provide support. Simultaneously, through AAA's safety partnership with HAAS Alert, drivers in supported markets may receive Slow Down, Move Over digital alerts via their Safety Cloud-connected vehicles or mobile navigation apps. "Real-world safety doesn't end when the crash is over or when a customer pulls over to the shoulder," said Jennifer Morrison, Director of Vehicle Safety Strategy at Mazda North American Operations. "Some of the most dangerous moments on the road happen after the initial event, when other drivers come up on a stopped or disabled vehicle

Federal securities regulators issued a proposal on updated cryptocurrency custody rules for investment advisors. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sent its proposal to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on Tuesday (Aug. 25) per a post on its website. “This proposed rules and rule amendments would improve and modernize the regulations around custody of investment adviser client assets and fund assets, including to address crypto assets,” the SEC said. “Currently, investment advisers and investment companies have raised questions about how to hold crypto assets in compliance with the current commission custody requirements.” The commission added that the rulemaking would clarify the framework for crypto asset custody for investment advisers and investment companies, while also making other updates to “remove burdens from certain outdated provisions that are no longer needed to provide investor protection given the evolution in the markets and security trading and holding practices.” We’d love to be your preferred source for news. Please add us to your preferred sources list so our news, data and interviews show up in your feed. Thanks! According to a Wednesday (Aug. 26) Bloomberg News report, full details of the new proposal won’t be made known until the OMB reviews the SEC rule. Once it goes back to the agency, the all-Republican commission will vote on it and release it to the public. The report added that the SEC normally accepts at least 60 days of public comment before reviewing the input and weaving it onto the final version of the rule, which will also need a vote before it can be put into effect. The Bloomberg report characterized the development as the latest indiction that regulators are proceeding with the Trump administration’s crypto agenda while legislation meant to define crypto market structure regulation remains stalled in the Senate.

Hyundai Confirms Santa Fe EREV Plug-in Hybrid for 2027 US Launch Hyundai has locked it in. The automaker confirmed the launch window and core specifications for its first extended-range electric vehicle, the 2027 Santa Fe EREV, during its 2026 CEO Investor Day. It arrives in the first half of 2027, positioning the brand between conventional hybrids and full battery electrics in North America. Engineered in Korea, built in Alabama. The Santa Fe EREV will roll out of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, and that localized production ties into a broader North American plan that targets an additional 500,000 units of regional capacity and lifts local parts sourcing above 80 percent by 2030, according to Hyundai. The powertrain runs as a serial hybrid. Instead of the combustion engine driving the transmission directly, it works solely as an onboard generator, recharging the high-voltage battery pack while the vehicle is moving. Hyundai is targeting more than 600 miles, roughly 965 km, of total combined range on a single tank and charge. Central to the package is Hyundai's next-generation in-house battery cell design. The company says it delivers more than double the power output of its previous high-nickel cells while cutting charging times by 40 percent. The EREV uses less than half the battery capacity of an equivalent full battery electric vehicle. That trims weight and manufacturing cost while retaining instantaneous electric torque and quiet operation. Prototypes have reportedly already been spotted in real-world testing. They wore the internal designation "MX5a EREV," with the "A" denoting North American market specification. Those test cars are said to have revealed a dual-door layout, pairing a traditional fuel door with a dedicated plug-in charging port. The EREV arrives alongside the refreshed fifth-generation Santa Fe styling. It integrates Hyundai's next-generation Pleos Connect connected-car platform and Gleo AI assistant. Hyundai

But robots are not often, if ever, spotted on the bikeway. So where did this sign come from, and what’s its purpose? There is one clue as to where the sign came from. On the back of the sign, a sticker reads “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs.” More on that later. But the Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee, responsible for putting up the signs along the bikeway, said the sign’s origins are unknown. Betty Gau, chair of the committee, said she first noticed the sign this spring and alerted the other committee members of its existence in an email on May 25. The committee opted to keep the sign up because they found it to “be amusing and clever and harmless,” Gau said. They ask everyone using the bikeway to stay to the right, she said, so it’s “sending the right message.” “The bikeway is for everyone, there’s a variety of users from tricyclists to walkers to runners, we want everyone to be safe, even robots, they should stay to the right too,” Gau said. So what of that “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs” sticker affixed to the back of the sign? Well, it seems in addition to the road sign, the department also has a remarkably elaborate website. With tabs for unit registration, economic impact, incident reports, signage compliance, and a contact page, the site has all the markings of an official government website. The only problem is, the town of “Lexford” does not exist, and neither does a department of robotic affairs. The website, set in 2075, imagines a fictional future Massachusetts,

OCSO identifies and arrests suspect connected to June road rage incident OSAGE COUNTY, Okla. — The Osage County Sheriff's Office said they've identified and arrested a suspect they believe is connected to a road rage incident that occurred in June along New Prue Road. KTUL reported on this incident when the sheriff's office first asked for the public's help with identifying the suspect. Around 11:26 a.m. on June 14, the sheriff's office said they received a call from a driver reporting someone had shot at him while he was driving near New Prue Road and County Road 1705. Deputies said the driver told them he'd been driving westbound on New Prue Road behind a white Jeep Gladiator with a blue handicap placard that kept swerving back and forth across the roadway before it suddenly stopped in the middle of a bridge located near Osage. Authorities said the victim told them he was concerned about the Jeep's driver, so he stopped and asked if the other driver needed help. Investigators said the Jeep's driver lowered his window before brandishing a gun and yelling at the victim. Deputies said the victim quickly took off and began driving westbound toward Osage as he attempted to call 911. As he drove, law enforcement said the victim reported seeing the Jeep Gladiator following right behind him before he heard two gunshots go off. Authorities said one of the shots entered the car's rear window and hit the dashboard area on the passenger's side. Deputies said the victim's left arm was injured, likely by debris or shrapnel. Law enforcement said the deputies who responded to the victim's call documented his injury, the damage to his car and found a spent projectile on the floorboard of the driver's side. Later in the day on June 14, an

'Contrary To Law' Polestar Still Doesn't Understand Why It's Banned From Selling Cars In The U.S. But Volvo Isn't When it was announced that Polestar would be forced to pack up shop and leave the U.S. market, it came as a shock to many, including Polestar itself. Two months after the Swedish-Chinese automaker was told to get out, it sent a letter to its nearly three-dozen dealerships saying it was caught off guard by the U.S. government's June 24 decision, and it doesn't understand why its sister company, Volvo, isn't being treated in the same manner. In an August 18 letter to dealers seen by The Wall Street Journal, Polestar said it still doesn't have an explanation for why it must cease its U.S. sales, while Volvo is allowed to continue on even though it sells some vehicles that are nearly identical. The letter also alleged that the U.S. Department of Commerce signaled that the automaker would be allowed to stay in the country. I guess Trump and his boys changed their minds. In the letter, Peter Wexler, Polestar's U.S. head of product, retail network and government affairs, said, "We are currently focusing on getting the attention of [the Commerce Department] to obtain the requested information and to understand the underlying basis for the denial." Polestar's ban is part of a wider crackdown on Chinese vehicle tech aimed at preventing China from spying on Americans with connected-vehicle technology, something we've reported on in the past, typed up on our Chinese-made laptops that you've undoubtedly read on your Chinese-made phones. The ban has been implemented by the Trump administration, but it would be unfair to neglect the fact that the Biden administration kicked this whole thing off. Strung along Commerce officials were apparently ready to approve both Volvo and Polestar staying

Cadillac is the highest-ranked overall brand in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study. Hyundai takes top nods among mass market brands for the 7th consecutive year. Overall, JD Power researchers say vehicle owners are most satisfied with smart technology they barely notice - things that simplify tasks like starting the vehicle and managing cabin comfort. Features like smart ignition, which automatically starts and turns off the vehicle based on driver actions, and smart climate control, which uses artificial intelligence to adjust the cabin environment for maximum comfort and efficiency, deliver high satisfaction with few problems, while more complex features like hands-free driving systems and passenger screens often add friction instead of value. “The technology customers value most is often the technology they barely notice because it simply works,” said Doron Hikry, director of customer success at JD Power. “Smart ignition and smart climate control make everyday driving easier without demanding the driver’s attention, while more automation and additional screens don’t necessarily translate into a better experience. For automakers, the opportunity is to prioritize technology that makes driving simpler, not more complicated. The features that solve real problems without adding effort or stress for the driver are the ones resonating most with customers.” Here are some of the key findings of the 2026 index: - Inconspicuous smart tech delivers the strongest payoff: The study found that smart technologies that operate seamlessly in the background are earning high satisfaction among owners while also generating relatively few problems. For example, smart ignition ranks highest in overall satisfaction and has one of the lowest problem counts (2.4 PP100). Smart climate control and smart driver preferences also account for high levels of customer satisfaction and desirability, and low overall problem counts. - More automation doesn’t automatically improve the experience: In the

Richmond airport will connect Rental Car Center to terminal
Richmond International Airport has opened bidding to connect the facility's Rental Car Center to the main terminal building.
The construction project, which was estimated last year at $25 milllion, will also build a small park with room for a food truck near the rental car area.
Rental car agencies will relocate their kiosks from their current area in the center of the main building to the area next to the rental car garage.
A request for proposals issued by the airport touted the benefits of the move, saying it would provide "more intuitive access" for people renting cars.
"At the radial center point of the connector will be an outdoor pocket park with new hardscape and softscape, seating, interactive displays, as well as accommodations for a future food truck," it read.
The airport also recently unveiled its first public art, a sculpture of hummingbirds located between the two daily parking garages. It was made by national artist Matthew Mazzotta, who created a famous flamingo sculpture in the Tampa airport.

Polestar Wants Answers After Being Banned In The US The automaker expected approval to keep selling cars here. Then Volvo got a pass under the same Chinese ownership. Starting in 2027, Polestar will be banned from selling new cars in the US because of its ties to China. The automaker doesn't plan to appeal the decision, but that doesn't mean it's happy about it. Polestar still wants to know why it was denied permission to sell cars here when Volvo, which has the same Chinese parent company, got the green light. According to documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Polestar actually expected to receive approval to continue selling vehicles in the US. The company says it was caught off guard by the decision after spending more than a year working with the US Department of Commerce. Polestar first submitted an application to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security in May 2025, seeking permission to continue selling connected vehicles in the US. The application was reviewed for more than a year, during which Polestar answered detailed questions from federal officials. Polestar 5 The automaker also offered several measures to address the government's security concerns, including cybersecurity reviews, audits, and changes designed to prevent China-linked entities from managing vehicle data. According to Polestar, officials told the company's outside counsel in January 2026 that they had received enough information and were preparing to recommend approval. Then, in April, a Commerce Department official reportedly told Polestar that approval would be reasonable to expect if Volvo received authorization under the same ownership structure and with similar hardware and software. Volvo received its approval in May, while Polestar’s application was denied the following month. Polestar says the different outcomes could amount to "disparate treatment." Polestar 3 It's Not Just About Where the Cars

The Tata Sierra.EV now comes with built-in 5G connectivity, with Tata Motors integrating Tata Communications' MOVE connected-vehicle platform into its new N.IO software-defined vehicle architecture. The useful part is not simply that the Sierra.EV has a faster mobile connection. The 5G link is designed to support functions that increasingly depend on the car staying online, including faster over-the-air software updates, real-time remote diagnostics, emergency calls, remote support and in-car content streaming. Tata also says the system can support future AI-enabled applications and additional subscription packs. That makes the Sierra.EV an early example of how Tata intends to use its N.IO platform after the car has left the showroom. Connected-car functions are already common, including remote lock and unlock, vehicle tracking and smartphone-based status checks. The Sierra.EV takes the idea further by pairing an embedded 5G connection with an architecture designed to allow more of the vehicle to be updated through software. Tata Communications' MOVE platform handles the cellular connection, while N.IO is the vehicle's software-defined architecture. For owners, one immediate benefit should be quicker over-the-air updates. Instead of visiting a workshop for every software change, compatible functions can be updated remotely. Remote diagnostics are potentially more useful. Vehicle data can help identify some faults in real time, allowing support teams to understand the problem before the car reaches a service centre. Emergency calling and remote support also benefit from a connection that is built into the vehicle rather than depending on the owner's phone. The Sierra.EV already offers iRA.ev connected-car services, with Tata listing more than 70 connected functions and Advanced 5G on the SUV. The faster connection also supports entertainment. The Sierra.EV has a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and, on higher variants, a separate 12.3-inch passenger display. Tata's Arcade.ev system supports in-car entertainment, while the new connectivity arrangement is intended

I have my own pet theory for why Volvo was approved as an automaker in the United States and Polestar, which is owned by the same company and makes some nearly identical cars, was banned. The whole situation is strange and a newly revealed letter makes it all the more curious. The Morning Dump today shall venture into the unknown. Why was Polestar banned? Why is Porsche selling its IT consultancy to Tata’s tech consultancy and then buying back AI services? Why is Ford swapping from Google to Apple for its new vehicles? Volkswagen Group is nothing but a series of question marks masquerading as a company, and one wonders how CEO Oliver Blume is going to get everyone to agree on an answer. Polestar Seems To Think It Was Going To Be Approved While there are some differences between Polestar and Volvo, they’re both Swedish brands that eventually were gobbled up by the Chinese holding company colloquially referred to as Geely. As with most car companies under the same umbrella, there’s a lot of platform and parts sharing going on between them (also, Volvo Cars has owned large parts of Polestar, variously, throughout the years). In terms of corporate structure, you can think of Volvo and Polestar less like GMC and Buick under GM, and more like Audi and Porsche under Volkswagen Group. This June, the American government decided to use a rule put in place under the Biden Administration focused on Chinese connected cars to ban Polestar from selling vehicles in the United States, including SUVs it builds in the United States. This was strange. The Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 are essentially the same, share a similar software stack, and have a shared corporate parent, and yet one is banned and the other is not. Dealers have

7 Of The Best Bluetooth Car Adapters For Every Port Type We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Most cars these days natively support Bluetooth connections in one way or another. Most automakers began including the technology in the early 2000s, and it became standard equipment by the early 2010s, making your car maybe the ultimate cool Bluetooth gadget to use with your phone. However, it's also true that there are tens of millions of older cars still on the road as of 2026, and many of those older vehicles don't have Bluetooth. For people driving those cars, a Bluetooth car adapter can help bridge the gap to let them use their modern devices in their older vehicles. The technology for Bluetooth car adapters hasn't changed too much in the last 20 years. When I was younger, I had one such adapter for a 2007 Chevy Equinox, which I owned until 2017. While the radio was perfectly usable, I had a base trim model that didn't include an auxiliary (AUX) jack, and with phones losing their headphone jacks late in my ownership of the car anyway, a Bluetooth adapter made the most sense for enhancing my listening. Adapters have gotten a lot better since then, mostly thanks to improvements in Bluetooth technology, but they're still available for just about every type of port your car can possibly have. So if you're on a journey to make your vehicle Bluetooth-enabled, there are plenty of excellent car adapters that can help your cause. Some of those adapters will even add Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to your car if it's equipped to handle it, bringing your car up to date with modern standards. Here are some of the best Bluetooth car adapters that you may want to consider. USB

Volvo EX30 Cross Country review The EX30 is one of Volvo’s most popular electric cars, so it came as no surprise when a Cross Country variant was added. This gives you extra cladding, a ride height increase, more power and (optional) chunkier tyres. But is all this worth it for a four-figure premium? Read our Volvo EX30 Cross Country review to find out. Pros - Cool styling - Blisteringly quick - Raised ride height is useful Cons - Quite pricey (when new) - Could have more electric range - Ready for off-roading? We’re not sure Interior Our rating: 8/10 Driving position If we’re totally honest, the driving position in the EX30 Cross Country is close to perfection for this type of car. We like to sit nice and low and bring the steering wheel towards us, and this does that without breaking a sweat. A lot of electric cars force you to sit too high up, which is great if you want a wide view of the road ahead, but less so if you want to feel connected to the car. Even in the lowest position, you can see a lot around you, and the windscreen is tall, so you don’t feel cramped. The large sunroof helps with this too, making the interior feel much bigger than it is. Tech and features Volvo EX30 Cross Country trims – Plus – Ultra Unlike the basic EX30, the Cross Country sticks to the two higher trims, ditching the entry-level Core model completely. This gives you more for your money. Plus models get basically everything you’d want in a modern car, from heated seats and a powered tailgate to ambient lighting and a 12.3-inch portrait screen (with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). Built into the screen is Google software, meaning you have

Android car systems abused by hackers to launch new malware that pulls devices into a hidden proxy network Is a botnet made out of cars called a "bot fleet"? - Kaspersky found Android malware abusing DoFun car head units via TWCore updates - Multi‑stage attack installs loaders and reverse proxy, aiming to build a botnet of connected cars - Campaign attributed to MoYu Group; DoFun patched vulnerabilities after disclosure We’ve seen botnets comprising cameras and DVRs, we’ve even seen botnets comprising smart fridges and digital frames, but we’ve never seen botnets comprising automobile infotainment systems. First time for everything. Earlier this week, security researchers Kaspersky warned about finding a brand new Android malware targeting the car’s head unit. The victim seems to be a Chinese manufacturer called DoFun. Head units from this manufacturer, built on Android, are running an app for analytics and software updates called TWCore. According to Kaspersky, the attackers abused TWCore’s update mechanisms, instructing it to download a malicious APK. This malware is then placed in the app’s cache directory and installed by the legitimate com.tw.core package. No active campaigns The researchers said this was a multi-stage attack. In the first stage, a tiny dropper with no user interface gets deployed. It decrypts embedded data, and extracts the information it needs for stage two. In the next stage, the loader contacts the attackers’ server and gets instructions about stage 3, which can be different things, from deploying additional malware, to running the “zhima” reverse proxy. Despite its multifunctional nature, Kaspersky believes that the true goal of the campaign is to assimilate the cars into a botnet. Some cars come with a SIM slot and are connected to the internet 24/7. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that cars just might be the perfect devices for
