The United States will not allow Chinese-made electric vehicles entering Canada to cross into its market, according to US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra. Hoekstra said vehicles imported from China into Canada would be blocked from entering the US, regardless of Ottawa’s recent decision to ease tariffs on those models, reports Bloomberg. “Those cars can come in from China, come into Canada, but they’re not going to cross the border into the US,” Hoekstra said. “We’re not going to open the floodgates to Chinese cars entering the US from Canada.” Hoekstra said the position is based on national security concerns, particularly that of data collection and transmission in connected vehicles. The US has already restricts vehicles using certain Chinese and Russian technology, but Hoekstra did not outline exactly what enforcing such a move at the border would entail. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reduced tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles this past January, allowing up to 49,000 vehicles into Canada over a 12-month period. In return, China agreed to lower tariffs on Canadian agricultural exports, including canola and lobster. Canada had previously imposed a 100 percent tariff on Chinese EVs, in alliance with US policy at the time. Hoekstra also minimized concerns about Canada’s role in US auto trade. He pointed out that vehicles produced in Canada often contain a high percentage of US-made parts. “Cars going across the border are 50 percent, 75 percent US content,” he said. “Those are the kind of cars we like coming in.”

The partnership, announced Tuesday (March 31), will see Amazon install its Leo satellite technology on hundreds of Delta Air Lines planes, with an initial launch of 500 aircrafts starting in 2028. In recent years many European car makers have taken a licence for patents related to connected cars. Now seven Chinese car manufacturers have signed agreements with Avanci for its licensing programmes. 31 March 2026 by Konstanze Richter Avanci today announced the conclusion of ten licence agreements to date across its 4G Vehicle and 5G Vehicle licensing programmes. While not naming the seven car manufacturers in its press release, the patent pool hinted at further licensing deals to come in the months ahead. Laurie Fitzgerald, president of Avanci Vehicle, said, “More than 150 automotive brands worldwide are participating in at least one of our Vehicle licensing programmes, underscoring the value of a predictable, one-stop-shop licensing solution.” Quan Jian, senior vice president of licensing at Avanci, added, “We remain committed to working closely with participants across China as the market continues to evolve.” According to the patent pool, more than 275 million connected vehicles are now covered by an Avanci licence. Participating automotive brands licence cellular standard essential patents from almost 70 licensors through the Avanci 4G Vehicle programme and almost 90 licensors through the Avanci 5G Vehicle programme. This was not always the case. Only a few years ago European car manufacturers fought a bitter feud with patent holders and their patent pools over patents covering connected car technology. As home EV chargers get smarter, they also inherit new attack surfaces. Understanding how power line communication works and where it can go wrong can help homeowners make better security decisions before convenience turns into security incidents. For many homeowners, a wallbox feels like a simple appliance you can just mount, connect, charge the car with, and move on. But modern EV charging extends beyond mere electricity, as many chargers now combine cloud connectivity, firmware updates, mobile companion apps, remote management and, in some cases, even standardized communication between the vehicle and charger over power line communication (PLC). Although the added intelligence brings much more convenience, it also expands the attack surface. Standards used in EV charging, especially ISO 15118, rely on HomePlug Green PHY to carry data between the vehicle and charging equipment over the charging connection itself. As researchers have pointed out, several weaknesses affect EV charging communications, including eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle (MiTM) attacks, under certain conditions. While this doesn’t mean every home charger can be hacked from the street, it does mean homeowners should stop seeing their wallboxes as mere “power devices.” In reality, these devices are better categorized as IoT endpoints with physical charging roles. In plain language, PLC in EV charging allows the car and charger to negotiate charging parameters and, in some cases, support advanced features such as Plug and Charge. The issue is that researchers have found design and implementation flaws around this communication process. A notable CISA advisory from late 2025 warned that manipulating the SLAC (Signal Level Attenuation Characterization) pairing process in ISO 15118-2 could facilitate an MiTM attack, potentially even wirelessly at close range via electromagnetic induction. Samsung and the Hyundai Motor Group are bringing smart home control directly into the vehicle with the new car-to-home service. Owners of Hyundai and Kia models can now remotely control household appliances connected to SmartThings via their car’s infotainment system – from the air conditioning and lighting to the robot vacuum cleaner. Samsung Car-to-Home complements the existing Home-to-Car service Samsung and the Hyundai Motor Group launched the home-to-car service back in September 2025. For the first time, users were able to control their vehicle from home via the SmartThings app – for example, to preheat the air conditioning, start the engine or lock and unlock the doors. Now the networking also works in the other direction: compatible smart home devices can be operated from the car. Specifically, devices such as air conditioning systems (from model year 2021), air purifiers and robot vacuum cleaners (from model year 2024) as well as lighting systems are supported, provided they are compatible with the SmartThings platform. They are controlled via a touchscreen in the vehicle. Set up via QR code in just a few steps Setting up the car-to-home service is very simple: users with an active Hyundai Bluelink or Kia Connect subscription scan the QR code displayed in the vehicle’s SmartThings app using their smartphone.
