'Behavioural fingerprint': Privacy watchdog targets car makers

‘Behavioural fingerprint’: Privacy watchdog targets car makers The OAIC is seeking answers after claims that two Asia-based car makers are harvesting private driver data from connected cars. Australia’s privacy watchdog is currently in the middle of an investigation into two car makers based in Asia, claiming they collected personal driver information through internet-connected cars. In February 2026, Australia’s Privacy Commissioner, Carly Kind, spoke at a Senate Hearing, where she confirmed that the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) had launched two official inquiries, while a further two investigations were dropped. RELATED: ‘Your weight, your speed, where you work’: How your connected car is tracking your every move A spokesperson for the OAIC told Drive that its investigations into the two Asia-based manufacturers are about the car makers' collection practices, including “whether they collect more personal information than is reasonably necessary for their functions and features”. Additionally, the OAIC is looking into whether the two car makers obtained valid consent and whether they have used or disclosed this information “for secondary purposes without consent or a valid exception”. As per a 2024 Drive report, some car makers in the US were allegedly collecting personal driver information and passing it on to external data brokers, who in turn sold the data to insurance companies. “Overcollection and unnecessary retention of personal information creates risk to personal security and privacy,” an OAIC spokesperson told Drive. “Location data in particular, which connected vehicles have the potential to easily collect, is a specific category of data that presents clear privacy concerns,” they said. The OAIC could not provide an update and did not disclose which manufacturers were under investigation, but said it aimed to complete its report within 18 months. While driver location is a major concern among regulators, experts have said connected cars can

I finally figured out how to easily switch from Apple CarPlay to Android Auto

Car infotainment systems like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make driving a million times more enjoyable. The easy access to navigation, the simplicity of listening to music and podcasts, and even the ability to play little games while parked are a huge step up from previous iterations. Unfortunately, if you're an Android user who shares your car with an iPhone user, you could get frustrated with switching between the two to the point that you aren't enjoying all that these systems offer. That's why finding a way to swap between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is so important. How to switch between Apple CarPlay and Android Auto In just a few clicks If you just jumped into the car and your partner is hooked up to Apple CarPlay, you might think it takes changing a lot of settings to get back to Android Auto. I found a few quick clicks in my 2023 Toyota RAV4, though, that will take care of it for you. For starters, before you even get into the car, make sure your Bluetooth is turned on. For whatever reason, getting the car to recognize your smartphone by turning on Bluetooth when you're in the driver's seat substantially lengthens this process. After that, go to the settings menu and select the Bluetooth connection option. There, you should see a list of the phones that are connected to the car. They allow separate drivers, like my wife and me, to have different settings and features enabled when we drive. All we do is log in to our

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Gets Smarter, Faster, and Slightly More Opinionated

(TestMiles) – There is a moment when a luxury SUV stops being just transportation and starts behaving like a system. Not a vehicle. Not a machine. A system. And with the latest Mercedes-Benz GLE, that moment arrives somewhere between the 27 sensors quietly scanning your surroundings and the realization that your headlights are now doing computational efficiency calculations. This is not a redesign in the traditional sense. It is more of a recalibration, one that leans heavily into software, intelligence, and a slightly unapologetic belief that technology should do more of the thinking. At the center of it all is Mercedes’ new MB.OS architecture. Think of it less as an infotainment system and more as the operating system for the entire vehicle. It is designed to evolve over time through over the air updates, which means the GLE you buy today is not quite the same GLE you will own a year from now. That is either reassuring or mildly unsettling, depending on how you feel about your car behaving like your smartphone. Inside, the most obvious shift is visual. The MBUX Superscreen is now standard. Three 12.3-inch displays sit under a single sheet of glass. It stretches across the dashboard in a way that feels less like separate screens and more like a continuous digital surface. Mercedes has gone a step further here. When no one is sitting in the passenger seat, the system does not just sit idle. It fills the space with ambient visual content. It is a small detail, but it speaks to a broader philosophy. The cabin is no longer just functional. It is curated. The digital experience extends beyond aesthetics. The MBUX Virtual Assistant introduces avatar-based interaction, augmented reality navigation overlays, and deeper integration with Google Maps. It is designed to anticipate needs rather

After deadly crashes, states move to stop 'super speeders' with in-car technology

After deadly crashes, states move to stop 'super speeders' with in-car technology (SOA) — A growing number of states are cracking down on some of the most dangerous drivers on the road — so-called “super speeders,” repeat offenders who push far beyond the limit — with a new kind of penalty: technology that can physically stop them from speeding. The push comes as victims and safety advocates warn that extreme speeders are responsible for a disproportionate share of deadly crashes. Deborah O’Garro-Kelly knows that reality firsthand. She and her husband were walking to the post office when a driver struck them in a Washington, D.C., crosswalk in a school zone. She survived. Her husband, Alton, who was legally blind, did not. Investigators say he was dragged 900 feet — the length of three football fields — before the driver sped away. It took 10 months before he was arrested and charged with, among other things, reckless driving: going at least 20-miles an hour over the speed limit, or showing conscious disregard for the safety of others. “I just feel numb. I feel like I'm in the world, but I feel numb. I feel like this man stole my life,” said O'Garro-Kelly. The couple had been married for four and a half years, but had known each other since she was 17. She described her husband as someone who made people laugh and feel special. “It's sad that a human being could get ran over like they a piece of trash. And I wish I could have saved my husband,” she said through tears. O'Garro-Kelly was unconscious after the crash. She suffered broken bones in her back, pelvis, right leg and left hip. She spent a month in the hospital and has undergone four surgeries, with more ahead. “It changed my

Tesla cracks down on FSD hacking devices, remotely shuts down access | Electrek

Tesla is hitting back at a growing gray market of unauthorized devices that unlock Full Self-Driving (FSD) in regions where the software hasn’t been approved. The automaker has been remotely disabling FSD on affected vehicles — permanently revoking access without warning. Reports are surfacing from owners in Europe, South Korea, China, and Turkey that Tesla remotely woke their vehicles, detected the unauthorized CAN bus devices, and stripped FSD entirely — reverting them to basic Autopilot. The €500 hack that bypasses Tesla’s geofencing The devices at the center of this crackdown are small, USB-like hardware modules that cost around €500 and plug directly into a Tesla’s Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. They bypass Tesla’s regional software locks and geofencing to activate FSD (Supervised) in countries where the feature hasn’t received regulatory approval. The concept gained significant attention after Michal Gapinski, the developer behind the Tesla Android project, demonstrated how a CAN bus device could be used to unlock Tesla’s software-locked features by piggybacking on the infotainment system. Since then, a cottage industry of similar devices has sprung up — particularly in Europe, where Tesla owners have been waiting years for FSD approval that keeps getting delayed. That frustration is understandable. As we reported last month, Tesla’s European FSD approval through the Dutch RDW has been pushed back repeatedly, with the latest expected date being April 10 — tomorrow. EU owners have been burned so many times by missed deadlines that many turned to these hack devices instead of waiting. Tesla’s enforcement: permanent bans, voided warranties Tesla’s connected vehicle architecture gives it full visibility into what’s running on its cars. The company has been monitoring vehicle logs for abnormal behavior, and when it detects an unauthorized CAN bus device, the response is severe. In China, owners who activated FSD through the hack

Wrisk Acquires Atto to Boost Open‑banking Credit Data

Wrisk Acquires Atto to Boost Open‑banking Credit Data Wrisk, an Insurtech company’s acquisition of Atto on 10 February 2026, illustrates how automotive manufacturers are expanding beyond vehicle production into finance, insurance, and digital retail. As OEMs invest in direct-to-consumer sales platforms and captive finance models, they integrate credit approval, affordability assessment, and protection products with core manufacturing and order management systems. The acquisition of Atto connects embedded insurance infrastructure with real-time financial intelligence within automotive ecosystems. It operates as a managing general agent in the UK and EU. It partners with automotive OEMs to integrate insurance into branded purchase journeys. Atto delivers a financial intelligence platform powered by open banking that focuses on credit scoring, income verification, affordability assessment, and behavioral insight. The collaboration creates a platform that connects finance decisioning and protection delivery within OEM-controlled environments. Manufacturers now manage more of the customer lifecycle, from vehicle configuration and order placement to finance approval and after-sales services. Wrisk positions its platform within the infrastructure and enables OEMs to embed insurance directly into their digital channels rather than redirect customers to external providers. Nimesh Patel, Chief Executive Officer at Wrisk, discusses how the acquisition supports the approach: “Atto has built a credible financial intelligence and credit scoring platform with real-world enterprise use.” He adds, “Together, we can better support customer journeys that span finance, insurance, and protection seamlessly.” The integration reduces fragmentation between systems for manufacturers. Instead of coordinating separate vendors for credit checks, insurance underwriting, and digital delivery, OEMs access finance and protection services through a single framework. The alignment supports consistency across markets and simplifies integration with internal sales and order management platforms. Nimesh outlines the broader direction for financial services within manufacturer-led ecosystems: “The future of financial services is embedded, contextual, and data-led.” Wrisk previously stated, “We are

Kia sees over 30 percent customers renewing connected car subscription

Kia India has reported that over 30 percent of owners renew its paid connected-car subscription. This translates to over 1 lakh users re-subscribing to Kia Connect at least once a year after their current subscription plan expires. Meanwhile, those purchasing a new Kia car in India with Kia Connect are offered the carmaker’s connected-car feature suite complimentary for three years. - Kia Connect offers over 100 features - Available in 3 tiers with 1-, 2- or 3-year plans - Was launched in 2019 as ‘UVO’ Kia Connect: What is bringing customers back for a renewal? Everyday features fuelling renewal of Kia’s connected-car platform in India Known as UVO since its debut in 2019, the Kia Connect suite presently includes over 100 features spread across five main categories – Navigation, Remote Control, Convenience, Vehicle Management, and Safety & Security. Of these, the features that are bringing customers back for a renewal, according to Kia India, are remote vehicle access, real-time diagnostics, plus an enhanced safety suite and predictive alerts – all of which can be accessed via smartphone or smartwatch. Enhancing the overall convenience are over-the-air (OTA) software updates, plus multi-lingual voice commands via Alexa for controlling in-car features like the navigation system, HVAC, seat ventilation and sunroof operation, among others. While there has been some scepticism levelled against the actual usability of connected-car features in everyday scenarios, Kia’s example reveals that there are enough buyers who actually utilise at least some of the tech that is on offer. Kia Connect prices Another factor most likely contributing to repeat subscription renewals is the cost of Kia Connect. Once the three-year complimentary period ends, customers can choose from three tiers of paid subscriptions, and the pricing appears to be fairly reasonable. Check the table below for the exact price breakdown. Kia Connect

Nissan Shuts Down NissanConnect App For Older Leaf EVs

Back in late February Nissan Leaf owners began to receive messages from Nissan informing them that the remote features in their cars would cease operation as the NissanConnect app would drop support for Leaf EVs produced before 2020 as well as eNV200 vehicles that were produced until 2022. The indicated cut-off date was March 30, giving affected users about a month to come to terms with the fact that their vehicle would soon to losing any and all remote control features. What this highlights is an increasingly pertinent question when it comes to ‘connected cars’, which feature a built-in wireless modem to provide a range of additional features. These require access to a remote server for even simple remote features like controlling the charging process or turning on the heating. This has left many Leaf users rather dissatisfied. While for such basic remote features you could make the argument that they’re just silly convenience features that do not affect the car’s functionality, modern cars are increasingly becoming reliant on such remote features, including for things like navigation and checking subscriptions for features like heated seats. Increasingly it would seem that we’re looking at the Car-as-a-Service (CaaS) model being implemented. The cloud giveth and the cloud taketh away. Cursed be the cloud. The real question is, why do they do this? Are the server hosting costs really such a massive financial burden? Could they not have a workstation pc in a closet somewhere handling all the requests? Surely they can’t be too processing or bandwidth heavy? Did they not account for this in the selling price of the car? If Lewis Rossman’s video is correct then the actual reason is security, or lack of. In that anybody can go to a URL, plug in a VIN (publicly available in many countries)

New BMW iX5 Hydrogen tank system.

How can hydrogen technology be integrated into a car in a way that combines greater range, faster refuelling and BMW’s trademark sheer driving pleasure? The answer lies in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen – and it’s as clever as it is elegant: the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system. With its innovative geometry, the new system stores around seven kilograms of hydrogen and takes less than five minutes to refuel. Technology-open approach meets the art of engineering: New hydrogen tank system in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Clever storage, more range. When it comes to hydrogen in the BMW X5, the powertrain is only part of the equation. Equally important is how the fuel storage system is integrated – and that’s where BMW’s latest tank technology comes into play. The BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen is a case in point. Its new arrangement and tank size not only offer a higher range of up to 750 kilometres1 but also have the added advantage of making exceptionally efficient use of the available installation space. That means the new system is fully compatible with the Gen6 high-voltage battery – without compromising on space inside the cabin. It also means models with fuel cell technology can be built on the same production line as other models. The 700-bar high-pressure hydrogen tanks additionally benefit from the mechanical protection provided by the vehicle structure, increasing safety even further. All-new storage system increases range. The new flat tank system consists of seven high-pressure tanks made of carbon fibre-reinforced composite, which are connected in parallel and integrated into a robust metal frame. What sets this design apart is that, instead of individual pressure vessels, multiple chambers are connected to form an enclosed unit controlled by a central main valve. This optimised storage concept increases

Intel to Make Terafab Chips for Tesla, SpaceX & xAI | auto connected car news

Intel announced that it would join the Terafab project, committing to design, fabricate, and package chips for the Austin facility. Lip-Bu Tan, Intel’s chief executive, met with Mr. Musk at Intel’s campus over the weekend in what amounted to a formal acknowledgment of how the project has been recast: not as a homegrown manufacturing venture, but as a co-anchored expansion of Intel’s foundry business, with Tesla and SpaceX serving as guaranteed anchor customers. “Intel’s capabilities in design, fabrication, and packaging will help accelerate Terafab’s goals,” the company said in a statement — language that, to semiconductor industry veterans, describes something closer to a foundry partnership than a supplier relationship. The shift reflects the practical realities of advanced chip manufacturing, an endeavor that typically requires a decade or more and upward of $20 billion to establish, along with deep institutional expertise that cannot be assembled quickly. Tesla has never produced a semiconductor wafer. Intel has been doing so for more than 50 years. Intel’s 18A process node, at roughly 1.8 nanometers, ranks among the most advanced in commercial production today, and the company’s packaging capabilities are regarded as world-class. What Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI bring to the table, analysts said, is something Intel has been urgently seeking: demand, capital, and the political symbolism of building artificial intelligence infrastructure on American soil. For Intel, the partnership amounts to the most significant validation of its foundry strategy since Mr. Tan assumed the chief executive role in March 2025. Intel Foundry recorded an operating loss of $10.32 billion last year on revenue growth of just 3 percent, and the unit has struggled to attract the marquee customers needed to justify its continued capital expenditures. Securing Mr. Musk’s entire compute ecosystem — spanning autonomous vehicles, humanoid robotics, satellite data centers, and AI model training —

Payments Are Becoming the New Pressure Point in Auto Retail | PYMNTS.com

Payments increasingly determine how consumers perceive large purchases, and few transactions carry more weight than buying or maintaining a vehicle. In automotive commerce, where transactions often rank among the largest in a household budget, the mechanics of how money moves now influence both margins and customer relationships, and the operations of dealers, too. Amberly Allen, founder and managing partner of Priority Commerce Automotive, said the industry’s reach underscores the stakes. “One in every four people in the United States is either affected directly or indirectly by the automotive industry,” she said, noting its central role in local economies and household spending priorities. That reach is matched by its place in consumer budgets. “When people are spending their money, it first goes to their home, second to their healthcare, and then third to automotive,” Allen told PYMNTS. A Multi-Party Ecosystem Under Strain Automotive commerce operates across a network of OEMs, lenders, service providers and dealerships. Dealers sit at the center, managing both the customer relationship and the flow of funds. Advertisement: Scroll to Continue That position has become more difficult as payment costs rise and systems age. Fragmented infrastructure limits visibility, while disruptions can halt operations entirely. Allen referenced past system outages that left dealerships unable to process transactions or complete sales, illustrating how dependent the industry has become on reliable payment infrastructure. Margin Pressure and the Cost of Acceptance Automotive commerce faces a set of pressures that extend beyond vehicle sales. Margins have tightened over time, while customers have gained more visibility into pricing and are holding onto vehicles longer, increasing reliance on parts and service revenue. “Margins are shrinking in automotive,” Allen said. “What [dealers] saw 15 years ago is so vastly different than what they see today.” Against that backdrop, payments costs have moved from a secondary concern

VLEO Satellites Could Bring 5G Connectivity to Cars in Remote Areas

No Signal? This Satellite Network Wants to Fix That—For Cars First A French startup wants to blanket the planet in VLEO satellites that connect to vehicles, not phones—reshaping how cars stay online far beyond cell coverage. The demand for constant connectivity is an ever increasing one, but there are places on earth where building cellular broadcast towers just isn’t practical or economically viable and may never be. And sure, Starlink satellites already exist, but from 340 miles up in the sky, they struggle to connect to the tiny, low-power antennas of a cell phone. Satellites orbiting lower need less power to connect, so French satcom startup Univity is proposing a constellation of very-low-Earth-orbit (VLEO) satellites just 230 miles up. Might that keep your AI digital assistant chattering as you navigate through Big Bend, Death Valley, or Glacier National Parks (each a notorious cellular dead zone). Is 230 Miles a Sweet Spot? Starlink and a bunch of other communications satellites occupy the “low-Earth orbit” (LEO) zone where the atmosphere is so wispy it doesn’t slow the satellite down and threaten to decay its orbit, but from this height it must broadcast its signal with about twice as much power to connect with devices on the ground, thus services like T-Mobile Band 71 can only kind of handle SMS text messaging via “Direct to Cell” service. From Univity’s VLEO vantage point, the atmosphere will degrade its satellites’ orbits, so they must expend propulsive force to stay aloft. Their planned ION-X HALO-MAX propulsion motors expend propellant, which they must bring with them from launch, with the understanding that after seven years the satellite will run out of fuel, its orbit will decay and it’ll need replacing. But the tradeoff is deemed worthwhile and allows its constellation to serve as a 5G non-terrestrial network
