UL’s Dr Muzaffar Rao discusses the professional diploma in OT security programme, and what motivates his research in OT and ICS cybersecurity. For Dr Muzaffar Rao, University of Limerick (UL) has been a research base for a number of years. When Rao first joined UL in 2013, he was a PhD student conducting research on reconfigurable hardware for security, specifically field programmable gate array (FPGA)‑based cryptographic systems. After his PhD, Rao began working at the university as a postdoctoral researcher with the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, a role that Rao says allowed him to further develop “expertise in hardware‑based cryptographic systems”. Fast-forward to the current day, and Rao is now an associate professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at UL, as well as an associate investigator with Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software. Rao is also the course director of the professional diploma in operational technology (OT) security programme – a specialised Level 9 programme that Rao says is a “unique offering in Ireland”, as it’s dedicated specifically to OT and industrial control systems (ICS) security. Olatunji said cyberattacks now occur every 39 seconds globally, with cybercrime losses estimated at 10.5 trillion dollars annually. He noted that Nigeria records over 4,000 cyberattacks weekly, accounting for about 45 per cent of incidents in Africa, while financial losses exceeded ₦12 billion in 2024. He added that global data generation had reached about 402.89 million terabytes daily and was projected to grow from 181 zettabytes to 221 zettabytes. “Data is now the new oil, driving everything from IoT to cloud services and digital platforms,” he said, adding that Nigeria’s digital economy is valued at 18.3 billion dollars and could double within five years. NSA networking tool poses threat to national security

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a warning about a network mapping tool developed by the National Security Agency (NSA). According to the agency, a vulnerability concerning extensible markup language (XML) allows “crafted session data to trigger improper handling of XML input, which may result in unintended exposure of sensitive information.” Security researcher Anna Quinn In a GitHub post explained that insufficient hardening of the XML parsing process could allow users to craft malicious requests when opening stored sessions, allowing actors to induce errors in the Grassmarlin message console. Grassmarlin is an operation technology (OT) tool created to help NSA security teams passively identify IP-based devices on industrial control systems (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks. The tool was retired in 2017 and no fixes exist for the issue. CISA recommended users minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems, and locate firewall-protected control system networks and remote devices to then isolate them from business networks. As recently explored by SDxCentral, the OT-based security threat has seen big ticket acquisitions such as Mitsubishi's buyout of Nozomi Networks, and ServiceNow snaring Armis recently for $7.75 billion. IXT, a Norway-based mobile virtual network operator, is moving to integrate cybersecurity more deeply into cellular connectivity, announcing a partnership with Zscaler to embed Zero Trust Network Access directly into its IoT platform. The initiative reflects a broader shift away from virtual private networks, or VPNs, which have long underpinned remote access but are increasingly seen as ill-suited to large-scale device environments. Instead, organisations are adopting Zero Trust models that verify every connection and limit access by default. By embedding Zscaler’s technology at the SIM level, IXT is targeting a persistent weakness in IoT deployments: securing large fleets of devices that cannot run conventional security software and are often deployed in remote or industrial settings. “VPNs were designed to connect users on laptops to corporate networks. A Quarter of Healthcare Organizations Report Medical Device <b>Cyber-Attacks</b>

One-in-four (24%) healthcare organizations (HCOs) experienced cyber-attacks impacting medical devices over the past year, causing potentially significant disruption to patient care, according to RunSafe Security. The security vendor polled 551 healthcare professionals across the US, UK and Germany to produce its 2026 Medical Device Cybersecurity Index. It revealed that, in 80% of cases, attacks affecting devices had a “moderate” or “significant” impact on patients. This could range from delayed imaging and postponed procedures to interruptions to critical care delivery, RunSafe claimed. Cybersecurity is increasingly being integrated into procurement and operations. Some 82% of respondents said they have deployed or are actively piloting runtime exploit protection, 84% said they include cyber in vendor RFPs, and 76% that they would pay extra for advanced protection. However, legacy equipment continues to expose many HCOs. Over two-fifths (44%) of responding organizations said they use devices with known, unpatched vulnerabilities, and 28% admit operating devices past end-of-support. Medical Device Manufacturers Hit by Major Cyber-Attacks The findings come as device manufacturers themselves come under attack. This week, US giant Medtronic admitted suffering a data security incident after notorious extortion group ShinyHunters listed the firm on its leak site in mid-April.
