Sim racing is flourishing, but what happened to the arcade racer? SimRacing Expo 2026 showed how much the genre has grown, while the casual racing scene is now largely concentrated in one series. I became a racing game aficionado at age five playing Lego Racers on my great grandfather's Windows 95 Gateway PC. And I've been a car enthusiast since my days careening the Subaru Impreza Rally Car '99 into walls on the dirt stages of Gran Turismo 2. But sim racing never quite did it for me, and that's become a problem, because sims have largely supplanted mainstream racing games. Bored during the pandemic and flush with cash after being laid off from my food service job, I bought a Thrustmaster T150 RS—an entry-level rig with a wheel, three-pedal box, and manual shifter (the third pedal and gearbox were extra). I drove my favorite tuner cars in Forza Horizon 4 and tried to make "realistic" driving videos like those viral guys on YouTube do with their thousand-dollar rigs. In sim racing, the sky's the limit; the logical conclusion of the genre is a hardware setup that reproduces every microscopic vibration of your in-game car via high-tech hardware like force-feedback steering wheels and haptic seating. It was fun, but it never quite stuck. Why? Maybe because my setup, despite being $300—a lot of money for a "casual" gamer to spend on what is, at the end of the day, a controller—provided an at best middling facsimile of the real experience of driving. The T150 RS actually has decent force feedback, but without spending another $2,000 at least on a basic FFB/haptic feedback sim seat setup, the rest of the experience felt about as akin to real-world driving as playing Gran Turismo on a DualShock gamepad. GRID Legends' online servers to shut down on PlayStation and Xbox in September
EA is shutting down GRID Legends’ online servers on PlayStation and Xbox over four years after its launch. EA’s Online Services Shutdown page confirms that online features in Codemasters’ arcade racer will no longer function on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One from 11th September. “We have taken the decision to retire online services in GRID Legends for this platform,” a notice reads on the PlayStation Store. “On this date, cross-platform play, online multiplayer modes, Quick Race, Dynamic Events, leaderboards, and other features that require an online connection will no longer be available to play in GRID Legends.” However, the single-player story campaign featuring live-action cut scenes will remain playable after the server shutdown. GRID Legends was also ported to Switch 2 earlier this year, with a Deluxe Edition bundling the post-launch DLC expansions. This version doesn’t include online multiplayer, however. EA has not yet confirmed if the Steam version will be taken offline or if the game will be delisted from digital stores. Released in 2022, GRID Legends is an arcade-style racer featuring multiple disciplines, from open wheelers to muscle cars and stadium trucks. 'Heading in the right direction' – Norris optimistic over McLaren's Barcelona chances after setting the pace on Friday Despite missing FP1, Lando Norris set the pace in Barcelona by the end of Friday. Lando Norris believes McLaren is "heading in the right direction" as the reigning World Champion topped Free Practice 2 ahead of this weekend's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The Briton finished 0.009s clear of Mercedes' George Russell in Friday's second, one-hour session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, despite missing FP1 as rookie and reigning F2 champion, Leonardo Fornaroli, took over his MCL40. With team mate Oscar Piastri second in FP1 and third in FP2, just 0.057s behind Norris in the latter, McLaren look on par with Mercedes as F1 returns to a more traditional style of circuit which is used extensively for testing. "It's not an easy track even though it's a track I know more than anywhere else," said Norris. "It's quick, obviously very different to the last few tracks we've been to in Monaco and Montreal. A lot quicker, you're playing with the car in a different regime to where we have been the last few weeks and it seems to also be working in a better place in the last few weeks." Norris has failed to finish in the last two Grands Prix due to technical issues, and despite a promising start to the weekend in Spain, believes more work is required before the car is in a comfortable window. The European leg of the 2026 Formula 1 season continues at pace this weekend at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, an event where many teams have opted to add updates to their cars. But what parts will each squad be running this weekend? F1.com has rounded up all of the details… Mercedes Championship leaders Mercedes are using an updated rear wing in Barcelona, featuring small winglets added on the centreline. The Silver Arrows have stated that these will increase the camber of the upper rear wing on centreline, which will generate downforce and drag “at a ratio attractive for this event”. Ferrari The most extensive wave of upgrades this weekend comes courtesy of Ferrari, the team having made updates to various components. This includes a revised front wing, which will be an evolution of that used previously with “enhanced tip flow features, coming with front wheel wake control benefits as well as increased aero balance capacity”. Another update aimed at increasing performance in local load is the floor, the Scuderia having brought an entire floor update which they say is “targeting overall aerodynamic load increase across the main car operating window”. Finally, to improve flow conditioning, Ferrari have added an inflated sidepod shoulder and adapted cokeline, developed in conjunction with the floor update. McLaren There is just one upgrade for McLaren in Barcelona, with the papaya squad running a revised front wing endplate to improve aerodynamic flow conditioning and bring enhanced aerodynamic performance overall. Red Bull Red Bull are another team to have made updates to their front wing this weekend. McLaren’s supercars are so good in part because they have good bones. The road-car arm of the reigning F1 constructors’ champion builds all of its cars off carbon-fiber monocoques, to which engines, suspension, and body panels are attached, race-car style. Even by itself, a bare McLaren Monocell chassis is an impressive piece of engineering. One that you can now own for much, much less than the cost of a complete car. The monocoque from a crashed McLaren GT is being offered for sale by 417 Motoring on eBay with, at the time of writing, a reduced asking price of $2,624.99. That’s down from the original asking price of $3,499.99, although you’ll likely have to pay the $1,200 flat-rate shipping fee to get the bare shell from Missouri to wherever you are. Still, by volume at least, you’re getting a lot of car for a fraction of what it cost new (about $210,000 in its debut model year). The seller notes that there is damage to the rear corner section, and to the front left side of the tub. And while windshield and roof glass are included, both pieces are cracked and may have to be replaced. It’s unclear if this damage is terminal, or if the GT could be resurrected with enough replacement parts. Monocell chassis are pretty tough, which is why crashed limited-edition McLarens like the Elva and Senna can still sell for six or seven figures even with salvage titles. It may not be financially worthwhile to attempt a GT rebuild, though. Introduced for the 2020 model year, the GT is based on the 720S but with softer styling and tuning, as well as added cargo space under the engine cover, Maserati Bora-style, to fulfill the grand tourer role. Forza Horizon 6 lets you race across a beautifully realistic open-world Japan, Mario Kart World has you duking it out in battle royale-style races, but both are missing the secret sauce: anime girls. Enter Project GT, a new racing game that takes the same concept that made Umamusume a viral hit and allows players to collect anime girls inspired by IRL cars. Just like Cygame’s popular mobile game, Project GT will allow players to upgrade their favorite character and duke it out in intense solo and PvP matches.
