Lotus to 'add lightness' to new sports car

The Lotus Emira has filled the role of two models since it was launched, becoming the effective successor to both the Elise and Evora, though there’s been no replacement for the Exige. That may soon change, after Lotus yesterday announced a raft of product plans, including a hybrid V8-powered supercar, and its intention to continue building the Emira in the UK. According to Lotus, an updated version of the Emira is around the corner, “designed to be the most powerful and lightest Emira built”, hinting at track capability to rival the previous Exige. With the current Emira tipping the scales at approximately 1400kg to 1500kg depending on spec, it’s a far cry from the sub-1300kg Evora and circa-1000kg Elise, leaving room for improvement for owners chasing a more raw experience. Last month, the Lotus-focused Emira Forum previewed an alleged leak of the upcoming sports car, to be called the Emira 420 Sport. Understood to be powered by the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine sourced from AMG, it’s alleged to produce 310kW (up from the standard 268kW), with its eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission enabling a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds. Additional claimed changes include a 5mm drop in ride height, which combined with a 32kg reduction in weight and other aerodynamic upgrades should enable the Emira to better perform on the race track and twisty roads. The upcoming launch of the Emira comes off the back of Lotus cutting approximately half of its UK workforce last year, with 650 of its 1300 headquarters staff let go. At the time, a downturn in sales and profits was pinned as the reason, with the electric Eletre and Emeya struggling to sell, while the Emira has been impacted by US tariffs. Formula 1 launches Sim Racing India Open in partnership with Mumbai Falcons The initiative will see participants compete in the official F1 game to nurture emerging racing talent in India. Formula 1 has joined forces with racing team Mumbai Falcons to launch the F1 Sim Racing India Open 2026, a championship designed to attract and nurture talent across the country via the official F1 game. With India representing one of the sport’s largest audiences, the programme will aim to create an accessible entry point for gamers and aspiring racers to showcase their skills in a national sim racing format on the F1 25 game. Once competitors have registered, they will take part in time trials and online qualification rounds, battle for position on the leaderboard and have the unique opportunity to progress to national-level finals. The combination of competitive gaming, structured leaderboards and national participation is expected to give existing audiences a greater platform to engage with F1, as well as introducing more fans to the sport. “India has an incredibly passionate and fast-growing Formula 1 fan base, and the F1 Sim Racing India Open 2026 is an important step in deepening our relationship with this Audience,” a spokesperson for F1 said. “Through this programme, we want to create a credible, competitive and accessible platform that allows fans and young talent across India to engage with Formula 1 in a more direct and meaningful way. “Mumbai Falcons bring strong motorsport experience and a clear understanding of talent development in India, making them the right partners to help deliver this initiative.” Competing internationally since 2019, Mumbai Falcons have an extensive record across karting, Formula 4 and Formula Regional championships, and were the first outfit based in India to win an FIA-accredited international single-seater series. Apple’s ARKit technology blends the racing simulator with real world elements, like hands and physical racing hardware. iRacing for Apple Vision Pro utilizes foveated streaming to render the sharpest content in the driver’s direct line of sight.
