NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday elevated the momentum in India-France ties with a strong push for innovation-led growth positioning India and France as key partners in emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, defence manufacturing, space exploration and resilient supply chains. Earlier in the day, addressing innovators, investors and entrepreneurs at Bharat Innovates, Modi projected India as a rising innovation powerhouse and called for technology that serves humanity rather than markets alone. "An India that is emerging not merely as a consumer of solutions, but as a contributor of solutions. Here, some are working to transform rural life through AI, while others are using satellite technology to support farmers. Some young innovators are shaping the future through smart cities, advanced manufacturing, and new materials... At the same time, several start-ups are developing new technologies in the fields of defence and security," Modi said. The Prime Minister urged startups to build technologies that are "trusted, inclusive and human-centric", arguing that companies should be judged not only by their valuation but by their contribution to society. The Bharat Innovates conclave, launched during Modi's France visit, brought together startups, venture capital funds, researchers and innovators from India, France and other countries. Modi interacted with entrepreneurs working in frontier sectors including quantum computing, semiconductors, biotechnology, defence, space, healthcare, med-tech and clean energy. The innovation push was reinforced during Modi's bilateral meeting with Macron at Villa Kerylos in Nice. Following extensive discussions covering defence, technology, space, trade, mobility and global affairs, the two sides announced 13 agreements and initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term cooperation. Notes on Egypt Abundance in the desert When my driver picked me up to take me to the New Capital, he was certain there had been a booking mistake. “Are you sure you want to go this way? I can take you to the pyramids or Alexandria instead.” There was no mistake. But driving there, past a mural of Egypt’s President Sisi every few hundred meters (sunglasses on, pointing at renderings of his new mega-city) I didn’t know what to expect. There’s only so much you can understand about the New Capital from reading about it online. Almost all the pictures are airbrushed or shot to show only the skyline without the heaps of rubble just to the side. Even the name is confusing. After years of competitions, jury deliberations, and proposed names like “Kemet,” “Wedian,” and “Memphis,” the city is still technically just the ‘New Administrative Capital.’ Cairo isn’t sinking like Jakarta, and nobody seems to know for certain why the New Capital exists. The official reason is to relieve congestion in a city whose metropolitan population is ~20 million. Yes, parts of Cairo are incredibly dense and congested, but there are also parts that are quite nice and spacious. The New Capital isn’t just a convenient annex to Cairo’s outskirts. It’s in the middle of the desert and took us an hour to get there and, according to my driver, “two hours, if there’s traffic.” On the night of Eid al-Fitr, Cairo was filled with swarms of teenage boys eager to practice their English with lost-looking foreigners. So I asked them why. Vietnam’s GDP growth came in at 7.83 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, building on the strong 8.02 per cent result in 2025 as a whole and placing the country among the region’s most dynamic economies. Alongside rapid urbanization and rising incomes, demand for transportation that is convenient, safe, and efficient has increased sharply. AI is raising expectations of a fundamental transformation in Vietnam’s transportation, logistics, and urban systems. At the “Mobility, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Society: Strengthening the Future of Transportation in Vietnam” workshop, co-hosted by the Vietnam Economic Association (VEA), Vietnam Economic Times / VnEconomy, and the Tech for Good Institute (TFGI), in coordination with the Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (IPSS), experts argued that the greatest challenge is no longer technology itself but rather the ability to integrate data, expand energy infrastructure, and prepare a workforce capable of adapting to an entirely new transportation landscape. Data comes first In every smart transportation system, from traffic signal optimization and freight management to urban planning and emissions control, data forms the operational foundation. Mr. Truong Manh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Environmental Quality Management Division at the Department of Environment under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said transportation remains one of the largest sources of emissions in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, alongside construction and industrial activities. Air pollution in large urban centers has persisted for years and exceeded regulatory thresholds over extended periods. As a result, resolving urban environmental problems requires comprehensive rather than piecemeal approaches, with transportation emissions control playing a central role. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam has officially signed Resolution No. 10-NQ/TW, dated June 8, 2026, of the Politburo regarding the development of the foreign-invested economic sector. The Resolution sets a general objective to transform Vietnam into a leading, highly competitive destination for medium and long-term foreign capital flows. Specifically: Targets for the 2026–2030 period include $200–300 billion in registered capital and $150–200 billion in disbursed (implemented) capital; 75% of foreign investment to come from developed economies; increased Fortune 500 corporations investing in Vietnam by 30%; at least three world-leading technology corporations to establish headquarters and Research and Development (R&D) centers in the country; a localization rate of 45–50% in key industries; approximately 10,000 domestic enterprises to participate in the supply chains of foreign-invested firms; increased proportion of Vietnamese personnel holding technical, managerial, and research positions in high-quality foreign investment projects; and 10% of industrial parks nationwide being "eco-industrial parks" and successfully achieving a stock market upgrade (according to MSCI rankings). By 2045, the foreign-invested economic sector is projected to account for 25% of the total social investment capital and contribute approximately 30% to the national GDP. This will play a pivotal role in establishing Vietnam as a leading hub for manufacturing, services, and innovation in Asia, and as a developed, high-income nation. Tasks and solutions To realize this objective, the Politburo requires the comprehensive and decisive implementation of breakthrough solution groups. Panaji: A digital platform built by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) to streamline industrial land governance has caught the attention of the countryâs nodal agency for industrial corridor development, with the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) now seeking to deploy it across industrial ecosystems in the country. The NICDC has approached Goa-IDC to formalise the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding, under which Goa-IDCâs OPEN portal stack would be adapted and expanded for deployment across Indiaâs industrial corridors and smart cities. The proposed framework aims to bring standardised, interoperable digital infrastructure to industrial land governance systems across multiple states. Central to the proposed agreement is a firm commitment to keeping the platform open. The MoU stipulates that the OPEN portal must remain open-source, freely accessible and available. âThe platform shall not be commercialised, monetised, or subjected to access barriers. Any sharing or usage of the platform, including by govt entities or implementation partners, shall remain consistent with the principles of openness, accessibility and non-commercialisation,â said an internal note moved by the GIDC. The GIDCâs role as the originating developer of the platform will also be formally acknowledged in all deployments. The GIDC launched the OPEN platform in 2024 as part of a complete revamp of the corporationâs digital services and e-governance platform. The draft MoU, which defines the roles and responsibilities of both organisations, was placed before the GIDC board for approval. The NICDC, which works with state govts to develop industrial smart cities and corridors across India, has made the promotion of standardised and interoperable digital solutions a cornerstone of its mandate. Once the MoU is inked, the OPEN portal could become the backbone of industrial land governance across some of Indiaâs most ambitious infrastructure projects.

Water levels at McCulloch are at 70 per cent of full pool and users are now required to use 20 per cent less water for agricultural purposes,” says Rod MacLean Utility Services Manager. “Without significant reduction in water use, the reservoir will empty before season end and cause water supply issues into the future.” All water customers can potentially help avoid further restrictions this summer by being conscious of water use, considering the timing of use, and promptly addressing any leaks in watering systems. Inside Mercedes' Plan to Decarbonise its F1 Operations The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is expanding its use of the all-electric Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 across nine European races in the current Formula 1 season. Electrifying motorsport logistics The eActros 600 is expected to travel around 15,000km during the European leg of the championship, which runs through to Madrid in September. Building on its earlier deployment in 2025, including a pilot at the British Grand Prix, Mercedes is increasing reliance on electric-powered transport across longer distances. In a first for the sport last season, Mercedes transported its W16 race cars from Brackley in Northamptonshire to Zandvoort using fully electric haulage, demonstrating the viability of battery-powered logistics at scale. A leading economist argued the country’s space industry could take a ‘big leap forward’ by building up its satellite infrastructure
The company raised US$75 billion when it went public on Friday and made its chief executive Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire.
But Shen Yingchun, a professor at Beihang University, told Beijing Daily: “China does not need to and cannot copy SpaceX.”
She said “the strength of the US model is efficiency”, using the market to drive down costs and forcing companies to innovate.
Shen argued that China’s commercial space sector was taking a different approach by focusing on building up its satellite networks before trying to cut costs.
“The strength of the Chinese model is scale – using the national will to concentrate resources and systematically address issues such as infrastructure, setting standards and risk sharing, where markets typically fail,” Shen said.
She said that once this infrastructure was in place, the country’s space industry would have the chance to “make a big leap forward” in areas such as the development of smart cities and the low-altitude economy.

The application period for the Smart Country Startup Award 2026 is now open. Startups from Germany with innovative solutions for digital government, public administration, and smart cities can apply until August 31st. This year's competition will again recognize outstanding technologies and products that advance the public sector. We are looking for startups that support municipalities, authorities, and public institutions in their digitalization efforts. Whether it's administrative digitalization, digital identities, public procurement, or smart infrastructure – the crucial factor is that the solutions are already being used in the public sector or are suitable for such use. The Smart Country Convention It offers participating startups a platform to present their ideas to a broad professional audience. At the same time, they have the opportunity to network with experts, potential customers, and partners from administration, business, and politics. Final at the Smart Country Convention After the application deadline, a jury will select the finalists. These finalists will present their projects live on October 14, 2026, on the Plaza Stage at the Smart Country Convention in Berlin. There, they will pitch to a jury of experts and the professional audience for the Smart Country Startup Award. The winning startup receives a stage slot at the Smart Country Convention the following year, worth €10,000, as well as a one-year Get-Started membership. Digital Association Bitkom. In Santander, more than 15 years after the launch of the Smart City program and investments exceeding 17 million euros, most of the promised digital services have still not been implemented. The municipality has officially acknowledged that key tools for residents remain in the deployment phase, with launch dates repeatedly postponed. Authorities attribute this to the complexity of integration and the need for further adjustments, but do not provide new deadlines. The Smart City project in Santander has been underway since 2010 and includes three stages: installing sensors throughout the city, creating a data management platform, and launching digital services for citizens. In the first stage, according to city officials, 8.4 million euros were spent, the majority of which came from European funds. The second stage—data integration and the creation of a management platform—cost 2.3 million euros. The third stage, launched in 2019, was to include the introduction of a mobile app, a digital resident card, and 15 interactive terminals in city streets.
