Ford Energy: Dave Carroll to Replace Lisa Drake as President Ford Motor Company has named Dave Carroll as president of Ford Energy, effective 31 August, as the business moves towards scaling battery energy storage solutions. Dave joins from ENGIE North America, where he served as CEO and Chief Renewables Officer and grew renewables operating assets more than 12 times over six years. He succeeds Lisa Drake, who will retire at the end of 2026 following a 32-year career with Ford. Important events may appear only briefly or occur far apart, making them difficult to locate and connect. Although current artificial intelligence systems can analyze short clips, they often struggle to understand full-length videos or provide clear evidence for their answers. This research presents CineSage, a searchable video-memory system designed to support question answering over long-form footage. Rather than relying on a single description of the video, CineSage creates several types of memory, including scene summaries, frame-level descriptions, object and region details, dialogue and speaker information, and person Re-Identification across scenes. These memory sources are organized with timestamps so the system can retrieve relevant moments and use a large language model to produce an evidence-supported answer. Ablation testing was used to measure how much each memory source improved the system and to determine which combinations were most effective. CineSage was evaluated using a question benchmark created from multiple long-form movies, with verified answers and supporting video evidence reviewed by several language-model judges. The system performed strongly on general questions but had more difficulty with precise visual details and exact timestamps, with its best configurations achieving accuracy scores as high as 97%. The AI revolution is often associated with chatbots and powerful computing, but every AI system depends on a rapidly expanding network of physical infrastructure. From data centers and manufacturing facilities to logistics hubs and smart cities, these increasingly complex environments are prompting organizations to rethink physical security as an intelligent operational capability that strengthens resilience and supports faster, better decision-making. Securing the infrastructure behind the AI boom The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving an unprecedented wave of investment in the infrastructure that powers it. According to market researcher IDC, worldwide AI infrastructure spending is forecast to reach $497 billion in 2026, with the market expected to more than double to exceed $1 trillion by 2029. As AI capabilities continue to advance, companies like Hanwha Vision, a global video security solutions provider headquartered in South Korea, are applying them to transform the physical security field. Hanwha Vision’s ongoing efforts to incorporate AI across its product lines have delivered real-time threat detection, faster incident investigations, enhanced imagery, and more efficient security operations across a wide range of industries. More than 70% of residents spanning both political parties say they oppose AI data centers, and policies to restrict or regulate them are rapidly increasing, according to Lauren Bridges, an assistant media studies professor at the University of Virginia. At the local level, “moratoriums have started to spread like wildfire across the United States,” Bridges said during a National League of Cities and American Association for the Advancement of Science webinar this month. “We’ve seen a shift from an incentive paradigm to a more restrictive mode of data center governance.” While cities are moving quickly to address data centers’ impact, they don’t have to choose between welcoming them and protecting their communities — but they do need to be proactive, the panelists said. “There’s a lot of money being put into this particular industry, and municipalities can see a benefit as well,” said Aurora, Illinois, Sustainability Director Alison Lindburg. “You have to think about the economic impact of data centers, and I think that’s one of the things municipalities are struggling with.” Get ahead of data center development Even though several data centers had already been built in the city, Aurora hadn’t defined what a data center was until this year. That was a problem, Lindburg said. “All of our data centers were being treated as warehouses, and they essentially don’t have the exact same uses and definitely not the same impacts,” she said. The data centers that had been built were not meeting state requirements and were raising resident concerns, so last year the city put a six-month moratorium on new ones. This gave city staff time to conduct research and hold a robust stakeholder engagement process, draft a policy and get regulations passed by the city council, Lindburg said. Smart Cities to Become Mainstream Not too long ago, the concept of smart cities was a little blurry and mysterious, with dozens of different definitions and interpretations but very little literature, case studies or actionable frameworks that could provide a clear roadmap for those intrigued by the vision but concerned by its applicability and feasibility. Today, there is a consensus on the urgent need for municipalities and regions to become smarter and more efficient in the way they manage resources, provide services to their constituents, solve urban problems, and plan for the near and long-term future. Even though the dialogue around smart cities still goes in multiple directions and keeps growing in intensity and complexity, it now looks more focused on common themes such as livability, sustainability and resilience that aim to improve quality of life and overcome pressing challenges affecting communities. We have also started to see more mature implementation models, standards and guidelines from industry, government and academia, as well as hundreds of success stories from around the world, with results and benefits that are evident and have gained support from citizens and city leaders. At the same time, we have also seen the emergence of a robust and dynamic technology market around smart cities that has permeated all sectors, powered by the same exponential trends of the fourth industrial revolution that are transforming manufacturing, supply chain, and the consumer market. Adoption of cloud computing, internet of things, blockchain, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and automation, are not uncommon nowadays in the public sector, with diverse applications that include transportation, public safety,enterprise systems, infrastructure management, and a variety of citizen services. This REU project focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of two marine energy technologies: an Oscillating Surge Wave Energy Converter (OSWEC) and an Ocean Current Turbine (OCT). For the OSWEC, an existing prototype was improved through mechanical and electrical modifications, including a chain-and-sprocket power take-off system and bridge rectifier, followed by experimental testing and comparison with WEC-Sim simulations. The results demonstrated successful electrical generation and highlighted the importance of matching device design and operating conditions to local wave resources. For the OCT, a scaled dual-rotor turbine concept was developed through literature review, generator selection, mechanical integration, rotor blade design, and CAD modeling. The resulting design incorporates a direct-drive frameless generator, bearing-supported shaft, and three-blade rotor and is ready for future fabrication and experimental validation. Together, these projects advance the development of practical marine renewable energy systems while providing hands-on experience in mechanical and electrical integration, modeling and simulation, CAD design, prototyping, and experimental testing.

Extreme heat — and the numerous concerns that come with it — has become a challenge for cities across the country, as they consider resiliency strategies for a present and future impacted by climate change. Riverside hosted the inaugural Extreme Heat Summit last September, a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The event served as a simulated emergency planning event with public and private entities and nonprofits. One innovative solution that came out of it is the neighborhood-level TreePlotter, a community engagement map showing where trees are located in the city. “It’s really detailed. It will tell you what the species is, what the coverage is,” Dawson said during a panel discussion Tuesday with other public officials and researchers about how cities and states are responding to extreme weather. The event was hosted by the School of Climate, Environment and Society at Clark University. “We can assess our tree canopy, see where the gaps are. It’s helpful, when we apply for grants,” Dawson said, explaining some of the benefits of the tree database. Many cities are not naive about the ways extreme weather is impacting their residents, infrastructure and other aspects of daily life, said Mark Davidson, an urban geographer with Clark University. But what they often lack, he said, is the capacity to act on these concerns. Often the limitation is funding, or the in-house expertise. “The harder question for them is, how do we act on what we know at this stage. So, how do we get the capacity?” Davidson said during the panel. “It’s really difficult to ask fiscally constrained cities to manage something like climate risk, which is now a permanent problem.” Officials lamented a “stepping back” by the federal government to prepare communities for extreme weather. When Munich-based bus and rail operator Flix acquired Greyhound nearly five years ago, the North American intercity bus operator had fallen on hard times. Its business was deteriorating and the public saw bus travel as unsafe and undesirable. Fast forward to 2026. “Students, young professionals, retirees and value-conscious travelers are all choosing intercity bus,” Flix North America CEO Kai Boysan told Smart Cities Dive. Greyhound upgraded its fleet with 185 new buses over the past two years and has 80 more on order, according to CX Dive. Bus departures from originating terminals are 95% on time, and destination arrivals are over 80%, Boysan said. Across both FlixBus and Greyhound, more than 37 new lines have been added year-to-date, he said. The FIFA World Cup matches across North America boosted ridership this year, Boysan said. Many riders took their first intercity bus trips during the games. Higher gasoline prices and the May 2 shutdown of Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier, also drove more travelers to intercity buses, he said. “New customers [came] to our network,” Boysan said. Some had never used Greyhound, “and this gave us an opportunity to demonstrate that our product is much better than what they thought.” The company is already preparing for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, he said. On the other side of the continent, the Northeast Corridor — especially Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington — is one of Greyhound’s strongest markets, Boysan said. “We see a strong demand increase, and we look forward to increasing our offerings in that region.” Greyhound lost most of its bus stations during the Flix acquisition because the properties weren't part of the deal. Much like its population, Hong Kong’s buildings are aging fast. As of 2025, 68 percent of private buildings were at least 30 years old, with that figure set to surpass 82 percent over the next decade. Safety concerns surrounding building upkeep reached a boiling point after a horrific 2025 fire at Tai Po’s Wang Fuk Court — which was undergoing renovation — cost the lives of 168 people in November. To mitigate future risks, experts have recommended mandatory, regular preventive maintenance for older properties and the adoption of smart tools to maximize the longevity of newer structures. Leveraging internet of things (IoT) sensors, artificial intelligence digital twins, and real-time analytics, Homegevity — a tech-driven smart maintenance model — has helped Cyberport's luxury Residence Bel-Air save over HK$1 billion in projected renovation costs. Founder Allen Ha Wing-on compares Homegevity to a "data-driven building health physician”. The system prioritizes preventive diagnosis and full-lifecycle management over waiting for government inspections to trigger costly overhauls. The Bel-Air residences comprise 2,700 units across 30 high-rise blocks, and have been occupied since 2004. By reallocating existing maintenance funds into predictive technology, the committee extended the buildings' lifespan without imposing extra fees on residents. Abstract Although digitalization has progressed rapidly, there is still a limited empirical understanding of how smart governance contributes to the evolution of new quality productive forces (NQPF) in developing countries. This study exploits the implementation of the smart city initiative as a policy shock and draws on panel data from Chinese cities spanning 2007 to 2019. The results indicate that smart city development is associated with a statistically significant increase in the growth of NQPF. Moreover, the estimated effects are stronger for new labor tools and new labor objects than for new labor force. Specifically, smart city initiatives facilitate greater governmental digital subsidy support for strategic emerging industries, significantly increasing both the breadth and depth of digital subsidies they receive. Additionally, smart city policies improve the local digital development environment while attracting digital enterprises and talent, fostering spatial agglomeration. Moreover, the influence of smart city development on strengthening NQPF varies according to a city’s degree of innovation capacity and the extent of focus it receives from both governmental agencies and the public. Notably, the policy-driven promotion of NQPF through smart city initiatives is more substantial in large urban centers, non-resource-based cities, and municipalities that do not belong to the category of old industrial bases.
