Piecyk: Tesla Cybercab Needs at Least 250,000 Validation Miles Before Commercial Ramp On Tesla's Q2 2026 earnings call, one number should have stopped every investor cold: 380,000. That's how many unsupervised autonomous miles the company's Cybercabs had accumulated in Austin, Texas — with zero notable incidents, management was quick to add. Elon Musk noted that outside actors had deliberately tried to provoke the vehicles, a reference to known vandalism issues in the city. But for Walter Piecyk, the financial analyst who asked pointed questions directly on that call and who joined Grayson Brulte on the Road to Autonomy podcast to dissect the results, that figure told a different story entirely. 380,000 miles is a rounding error next to what Waymo has logged. And it's nowhere near what Tesla itself needs before the Cybercab can scale. Its investigation revealed the cause--excessive movement and insufficient protection. The automaker is aware of a total of 15 potential incidents related to the issue, 10 of which are legal claims. PITTSBURGH — Completely driverless trucks developed in Pittsburgh are headed back out onto roads in the Sun Belt.
Strip District-headquartered Aurora Innovation Inc. became the first company to deploy a completely driverless truck on a public road last year. Shortly after, manufacturing partner PACCAR requested that the company place an observer behind the wheel as that generation of the vehicle had prototype parts. Now, the company has debuted its second-generation truck, putting vehicles with no one behind the wheel back on the road.
“Last year’s driverless launch proved our technology could operate safely on public roads, our new platform now provides the foundation to deliver at scale,” CEO and co-founder Chris Urmson said in a prepared statement. “Deploying our second-generation truck allows us to put hundreds of autonomous trucks on the road and ultimately into the hands of more customers.”
