Alphabet Plans to Raise $80 Billion for AI Infrastructure

The Google parent company’s equity offerings include $30 billion in underwritten public offerings, a $40 billion at-the-market (ATM) offering program, and a sale of $10 billion of stock to Berkshire Hathaway in a private placement, Alphabet said in a Monday (June 1) press release. Alphabet plans to use the net proceeds from the public offerings and the private placement for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditures for AI infrastructure and global compute, and to use those from the ATM program primarily to meet tax obligations associated with the vesting of employee equity awards, according to the release. “AI is driving an expansionary moment for Alphabet,” the company said in the release. “The company is experiencing strong demand for its AI solutions and services from enterprises and consumers, at levels that are exceeding the company’s available supply. By scaling its investments, the company seeks to expand its foundational infrastructure to support the significant growth opportunity ahead.” PYMNTS reported in April that during an earnings call, Alphabet said its capital expenditures reached $35.7 billion in the first quarter, with the majority directed toward servers and data centers to support AI workloads. Alphabet said in its Monday press release that it expects its total 2026 capital expenditures to be between $180 billion and $190 billion, and its 2027 capital expenditures to “significantly increase” compared to 2026. As the all-new 2027 Volvo EX60 starts rolling off the line in Sweden, the automaker was recently granted an exemption to sell connected cars in the U.S. like the EX60 that use software developed in China. It’s a big win for the brand, which, along with its Chinese parent company Geely, has had to navigate myriad issues surrounding software and manufacturing with the cars it imports to America. So, what’s next for the premium automaker that’s a niche player on the global stage? “We need more cars,” said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. Sources told the site that the language in proposed changes to the bill are clear, and that they could ban Mercedes-Benz from selling vehicles in the US. How quickly things can change in just about seven months. At the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo in October last year, Honda was extremely bullish about its future, with CEO Toshihiro Mibe outlining the company’s ambitious plans in India, the rest of the world, and in Formula 1. If you are a fan of F1 like me, you must have seen the ongoing disaster that has marked Honda’s new partnership with Aston Martin. Not all Honda’s fault though. According to F1 insiders, poor team management by their chassis partner Aston Martin has a healthy share of the blame as well. But this is not a good look for the Japanese carmaker by any stretch. And then there were Honda’s plans for the world. In Tokyo, I got up close and personal with the Honda Series 0, a SUV and a Sedan featuring a radical new design language both outside and inside. These were going to be Honda’s flagship products across North America, Europe, and China. However, in March, Honda announced that they were pulling the plug on the Series 0 electric vehicles.
