BYD: assisted driving slashes severe accident rate to one-sixth across 3 million vehicles BYD said its assisted driving systems are now deployed across more than 60 vehicle models, and nearly 3 million vehicles, with severe accident rates reduced to one-sixth of human driving levels based on airbag-triggered incidents per 10 million kilometres, according to Autohome. BYD also stated that parking-related scratches and minor collisions declined to approximately one-fiftieth of human-driving levels under its parking assistance system. The company referenced its “God’s Eye” intelligent driving system and the associated parking-assistance guarantee program introduced in July 2025. That experience got him thinking about how quickly everyday travel can become dangerous, and how he could affect change. “After that incident, that topic transformed from an interest to personal ambition,” he says. “It clarified what I want to spend my life working on, motivated me to use (artificial intelligence) and autonomy to build safer road travel systems, improve decision-making in complex environments, and leverage novel technologies to develop exceptional and life-changing applications.” Danish is fascinated by autonomous vehicle technology and the idea that software could reduce human error. He is exploring his fascination through Illinois Tech’s Elevate initiative and by joining the university’s EcoCAR team as a connected and autonomous vehicle engineer. “The Elevate [initiative] stood out because it emphasized internship access, real professional experience, and a clear pathway to develop industry-ready skills,” he says. “After I arrived, I discovered even more opportunities that reinforced that decision, including hands-on teams such as EcoCAR, engineering organizations, and development groups. Those experiences ended up aligning perfectly with my ambitions.” Danish says he has also found a culture of mentorship and support at Illinois Tech, especially from Teaching Professor of Computer Science Jacek Dzikowski, whose challenges have pushed Danish to aim higher than he thought imaginable. Engineers at GM have come up with a new idea for improving what a vehicle can see around it. Picture the top-down view that a 360-degree surround camera can generate, but then combine the images from the cameras on your vehicle with the cameras on the vehicles around you. That's a bigger, more detailed look, and it could be important for tech like self-driving cars. Teamwork Could Make The Autonomous Dream Work A recently published GM patent describes what the automaker calls a "collaborative perception system," and it uses it to create a "cooperative perception map." Those descriptions summarize it well, because it relies heavily on inter-vehicle collaboration. Autonomous vehicles rely on huge amounts of data to know their location, where they are going, and what is around them. Hyundai Motor America has expanded its over-the-air (OTA) digital features marketplace to four additional US models, bringing the total to six vehicles eligible to download and activate in-vehicle features through the Bluelink Store. The Tucson, Santa Fe, Santa Cruz, and Ioniq 5 join the previously eligible Palisade and Ioniq 9 in the Digital Features and Services platform. Customers can browse, purchase, download, and activate software-enabled features directly through the Bluelink app or website. Features are delivered via OTA updates and installed in-vehicle by the customer, without requiring a dealership visit. Purchased features remain active for the life of the vehicle and transfer to subsequent owners on resale. Stellantis has partnered with Wayve to enhance the self driving technology for its future models. Wayve's AI Driver system will be integrated into the Stellantis Autodrive platform, enabling supervised hands-free driving. IMI calls for mandatory TechSafe standards

Institute of the Motor Industry has called on Government to mandate TechSafe standards across the automotive sector as connected, electric and automated vehicle technologies become more complex. The call followed a policy panel discussion hosted by the IMI and attended by Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden alongside employers, legal experts, fleet operators and academic researchers. The panel concluded that Government intervention is needed to ensure technicians working on safety-critical vehicle systems can demonstrate auditable competence across emerging technologies. The IMI said its TechSafe standard could provide a framework for workforce competency recognition across connected vehicles, automated driving systems, electric vehicles and alternative fuels.
