Inside the simulator: F1's most secretive and indispensable tool

There is one door in a Formula 1 factory which no behind-the-scenes tour has access to: the simulator room. “Strictly no admittance, authorised personnel only” — or a similar phrase — will be written on the door. Inside is one of the most important tools used in the modern era of the sport. A driver-in-loop simulator allows teams and drivers to replicate the feeling of driving an F1 car on different tracks around the world, with incredible accuracy. This is a crucial tool, given testing is incredibly restricted — outside of filming days and Pirelli tyre testing, drivers are only able to use real cars from the 2024 season or earlier (called TPC testing). “F1 is quite a rare sport in the sense that we’re not really allowed to drive,” explains Arvid Lindblad, the Racing Bulls driver who is the only rookie on the grid this season. “In football, you can go and play football whenever you want — whereas in F1, it’s not the case. So [the sim] is a good way for us to continue driving and stay sharp. When I’m at home, I try to go on it every day.” Lindblad is describing the increasingly popular at-home simulator rigs which many drivers enjoy using in their own time. But the factory-based version, worth millions, is much more advanced. The leading F1 teams in the modern era employ a thousand, or more, staff, yet only a handful of those will ever see behind the simulator door. It was a significant step when Mercedes allowed F1: The Movie to film some scenes inside their simulator, the first time such access was given. Will Joseph, McLaren’s race engineering director and race engineer to Lando Norris, the world champion, told The Times what lies behind the no-admittance zone. “It’s a big

Thrustmaster's Best Gran Turismo Wheel Rim Gets a Next-Gen Upgrade

If you’ve been following our coverage of Thrustmaster’s latest direct drive wheel bases, you know I had plenty of good things to say about the T598 and its innovative axial flux motor. You also know I was less than thrilled with its bundled “Sportcar” wheel rim, with its hard plastics, cheap soft-touch material, and exposed screw holes. Finally, a refreshed “GT Wheel Add-On” offers a welcome alternative. First unveiled at the SimRacing Expo last October and available for pre-order since March, it’s now on sale and shipping from the Thrustmaster store, which you can access via our affiliate link. It’s essentially the same Gran Turismo-branded wheel rim that originally shipped with the T-GT, now updated with Thrustmaster’s next-gen Quick Release connector so it works natively with the T818 and T598 direct drive bases, no adapter required. The rim is officially licensed by Gran Turismo and Sony, and was designed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital. Having owned a T-GT myself, I can say this rim is still my personal favorite, and probably the best officially-licensed Gran Turismo wheel rim ever produced. The 11-inch (28cm) frame is wrapped in leather, and the four metal rotary encoders automatically map to traction control, brake bias, fuel, and torque in Gran Turismo. You also get two mini-sticks, two metal paddle shifters, and a complete set of PlayStation buttons. It’s a proven design with high-quality materials that simply works. For T598 owners especially, it’s a straightforward upgrade that puts a much better rim in your hands. The GT Wheel Add-On is available now for €249.99 / $299.99 from the Thrustmaster store (affiliate link). It’s compatible with PS5, PS4, and PC. See more articles on Thrustmaster.

Big Racing Weekend: Imola kickstarts WEC season while Max Verstappen returns to Nordschleife

A packed motorsport weekend is set to unfold as the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) launches its 2026 season at Imola, while Max Verstappen turns his focus to one of racing’s most demanding arenas at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The spotlight splits between endurance racing’s traditional curtain raiser in Italy and a rare appearance by a Formula 1 World Champion at the Green Hell. Both storylines underline the diversity of top level motorsport this weekend, with factory giants and elite drivers facing very different challenges. Imola hosts the opening round of the WEC season with Ferrari arriving under intense scrutiny after dominating much of the previous campaign. The Italian manufacturer heads into its home race as the benchmark, with expectations firmly set on delivering a statement performance. The Ferrari 499P Hypercar has already proven its pedigree, particularly over long distance formats, and Ferrari’s recent form positions them as the team to beat. The focus now shifts to execution over 6 hours on a circuit that demands precision, tyre management, and strategic discipline. Ferrari are the team to beat at Imola Rivals are closing in. Toyota continues to refine its package after a transitional period, while Porsche, BMW, Alpine, and Peugeot all arrive with upgraded machinery and renewed ambitions. The early phase of the season often defines championship momentum, making Imola a critical reference point for the pecking order. Track evolution and traffic management will play a decisive role. Imola’s narrow layout and limited overtaking opportunities place added emphasis on qualifying and pit strategy. Teams will need to balance outright pace with consistency, particularly as mixed class traffic becomes a constant factor throughout the race. While endurance racing takes centre stage in Italy, attention also turns to Germany where four-time Formula 1 World Champion, Verstappen is set to compete in the ADAC

These products target demanding users who prioritize precise control, realism, and customization to match their driving style. The XRW-G1 GT steering wheel features a 300mm diameter and combines aluminum, carbon fiber, and reinforced polymer for a sturdy yet lightweight build. At its center is a 5-inch touchscreen that displays real-time telemetry like engine RPM and flags. Surrounding the display are various controls, including backlit buttons, switches, encoders, and additional controllers, allowing users to fully tailor the setup for specific needs. To enhance realism, the wheel includes carbon-fiber magnetic paddle shifters that provide crisp tactile feedback. RGB indicators also show RPM and system status, helping drivers react faster during races. A quick-release mechanism allows for tool-free wheel changes, bringing the experience closer to real motorsports. The XRP-L1 pedal set is built on an aluminum base machined from a single piece of metal, ensuring high durability and minimal flex even under aggressive use. The gas pedal uses a 16-bit Hall effect sensor for smooth and precise input, while the brake incorporates a 200kg load cell with adjustable resistance via interchangeable springs and dampers to mimic real racing systems. The pedal design allows for angle adjustments and easy installation in various sim racing setups. Full compatibility with Thermaltake's software enables detailed customization of pedal response and behavior. Together, these new products aim to

Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: Yas Queen

The GT7 Online Time Trial has gone full supercar fantasy this week, dropping one of the most coveted road cars ever built onto one of the most opulent circuits in motorsport. The Ferrari F50 meets Yas Marina, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Don’t let the glamour fool you into thinking this will be a relaxing cruise, though. The F50’s naturally aspirated V12 is a derivative of Ferrari’s early-1990s Formula 1 engine, and it behaves like it: responsive, rev-happy, and entirely uninterested in forgiving sloppy inputs. Paired with Sports Medium tires on a track full of fiddly corners and abrupt direction changes, this one is going to demand precision. And then there are Yas Marina’s track limits, which have a reputation for being punishingly strict. Expect to see a few otherwise-clean laps thrown out because a rear wheel dared to breathe on the wrong piece of curbing. Time Targets The world record currently sits at 2:00.152. That puts the gold threshold (3%) at 2:03.756, silver (5%) at 2:06.159, and bronze (10%) at 2:12.167. With BOP and fixed settings leveling the playing field, the gap between you and gold comes down to how cleanly you can thread through Yas Marina’s tighter sequences without tripping the limits. Continuing Event: Alfa Romeo TZ2 at Lago Maggiore Last week’s pairing of the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2 carrozzata da Zagato with the full course at Autodrome Lago Maggiore continues for another week. The 1965 coupe on Racing Hard tires has proven to be a charming handful on Lago Maggiore’s flowing layout. The world record has settled at 2:11.151, which sets gold at 2:15.085, silver at 2:17.708, and bronze at 2:24.266. If you haven’t given this one a go yet, you still have until Thursday to chase it down. Event 1 (New This Week)

F1 Ownership has a new look: How to get your hands on a 2026 Aston Martin replica.

There is a certain prestige that comes with the British racing green of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team. The team exudes a level of sophistication that most of us can only admire from the safety of our living rooms. However, thanks to a newly extended partnership between the team and the memorabilia maestros at Memento Exclusives, that gap between the grandstand and the cockpit is getting significantly smaller. The two organisations have officially signed a multi-year extension, ensuring that the world’s leading motorsport memorabilia specialist will continue to produce industry-leading simulators, show cars, and authentic hardware for the masses. If you have ever looked at a modern F1 car and thought, “I’d love that in my lounge room,” this is the news you’ve been waiting for. The Ultimate Home Setup: The 2026 Motion Simulator Undoubtedly the stand out is the 2026 Official Team Motion Simulator. Not just a standard gaming peripheral; it is a piece of elite engineering built just 15 minutes away from the AMR Technology Campus. Using the team’s actual CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings, Memento Exclusives has recreated the chassis to ensure the ergonomics are identical to what the drivers experience on race day. The 2026 range has also been thoughtfully expanded. For those focused purely on the driving feel, there is the “X range,” while a new static wheelchair-accessible variation ensures that the thrill of a laps-per-second rush is available to more fans than ever before. More Than Just a Game For the collectors who prefer their memorabilia on a grander scale, the partnership also covers the Official 2026 AMR26 Replica Car. These are strictly limited-edition pieces, often seen at high-end partner events or in the posh confines of VIP hospitality. They are, for all intents and purposes, the closest a civilian can get to

EXCLUSIVE: F1 ACADEMY champion Doriane Pin on ‘learning a lot’ in new Mercedes role and working towards her F1 goal Reigning F1 ACADEMY champion Doriane Pin tells F1.com about how she is finding her new role as a Mercedes Development Driver and what the year ahead holds as she continues to work towards her dream of reaching Formula 1. A lot has changed in the space of a year for Doriane Pin. At the start of 2025, the French racer was embarking on her second and final campaign in F1 ACADEMY, one that would ultimately see her win the title as well as cementing an impressive record of finishing on the podium at every round she participated in. Now, in 2026, Pin is taking the next steps in her career – with one key milestone being her new position as a Development Driver with the Mercedes F1 team, a role that she will dovetail with a racing programme in the European Le Mans Series. It is clearly going to be a busy year ahead for the 22-year-old, meaning there is plenty to discuss as F1.com sits down with Pin during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend – with topics on the agenda including how she is finding her new role so far, what it has been like to work alongside the team’s drivers and the plans for her to get behind the wheel of an F1 car… ‘Fully taking’ the opportunity of new Mercedes role “I think it’s one of the first times I’ve come to the racetrack and I’m not driving, so it’s a kind of different feeling,” Pin admits as we chat on a sunny day in the Shanghai International Circuit paddock, with the weekend marking the first time that she will be observing an F1 ACADEMY race rather

Season prep, karting chaos and Monte-Carlo Masters meet-ups – what F1 drivers have been up to during early April Without any races this month, how have the drivers been spending their extra free time? Take a sneak peek into the life of the drivers off grid... With three race weekends complete under the brand-new regulations, and no racing on the calendar until May, the drivers have had the rare opportunity to review the opening chapter of the 2026 season – and to prepare themselves for what promises to be a thrilling return in Miami in three weeks' time. Despite the lack of on-track action, so far April has been anything but quiet for the drivers. From whizzing round local karting tracks, spending precious time at home with their loved ones, bumping into one another at sporting events, or even hopping behind the wheel to compete again – it’s not in the driver's nature to slow down! Staying ready Of course, the hard work never stops. Whilst racing has paused, the drivers are still clocking plenty of hours in the gym and the simulator as they concentrate on fine-tuning themselves ahead of May’s return to action in Miami. But for Franco Colapinto, April comes with an extra special item on the agenda. The Alpine man took to social media to announce a roadshow exhibition – a one-of-a-kind event set to take place on the streets of Buenos Aires. At the end of April, Colapinto will get behind the wheel of a 2012 E20 Formula 1 Car, an old Lotus with an Alpine livery, in his home city, in front of his home crowd – it's set to be something special!
