Researchers at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) have uncovered a critical, underrecognized trade-off in global environmental policies: while essential for improving public health, large-scale air pollution reductions are unintentionally intensifying warm-season surface urban heat islands (UHI) in humid climates. Published in the prestigious journal Nature Cities, the findings highlight the urgent need for integrated policies that address both air quality and urban heat adaptation, particularly in rapidly urbanising, humid regions. Many countries face compounded risks from intensified urban heat islands and air pollution. Over the past decades, stringent emission controls have successfully improved background air quality by reducing aerosols - tiny particles in the atmosphere that can reflect sunlight. However, the cascading effects of these clean air initiatives on UHI have remained largely underexplored. Using large-ensemble global climate simulations, a research team led by Professor Yuyu Zhou, Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development), Chair Professor of Global Sustainability at the Department of Geography and the Department of Earth Sciences at HKU, has demonstrated that UHI responses to background aerosol mitigation diverge significantly depending on the local hydroclimate. When aerosols are reduced, more downward solar radiation reaches the Earth, warming both urban and rural surfaces. In humid climates, such as East Asia and Indonesia, this creates a severe imbalance. Urban areas, dominated by impervious surfaces like concrete and asphalt, have limited capacity for evaporative cooling. In contrast, surrounding rural areas benefit from the increased sunlight, rainfall, and vegetation growth, which enhance their natural cooling processes. Consequently, urban warming significantly outpaces rural warming, exacerbating the UHI effect. Lotte raises investment in mega mixed-use project in HCMC to $2.28 bln, partners with local developer Phat Dat South Korea's Lotte Group has nearly tripled the planned investment for its long-delayed Lotte Eco Smart City project in Ho Chi Minh City to around VND60 trillion ($2.28 billion) and signed a cooperation agreement with Phat Dat Real Estate Development Corp. (HoSE: PDR) to jointly develop parts of the project. The agreement, signed on Friday, marks the latest step in advancing one of the largest mixed-use developments in Thu Thiem New Urban Area, where the project occupies one of the last sizeable land parcels in the district's central core. The revised investment value is significantly higher than the VND20.1 trillion initially approved when the project received its investment licence. Located in Functional Zone 2A, the project spans approximately 7.54 hectares across six land plots designated 2-1 to 2-6. The site sits adjacent to Thu Thiem's Central Square and central lake, with direct access to the Thu Thiem Tunnel and views across the Saigon River toward downtown HCMC. The development is also expected to benefit from major transport infrastructure planned for the city's future International Financial Center, including the Ba Son Bridge, To Huu and Thu Thiem metro stations, as well as the proposed Thu Thiem-Long Thanh metro line linking the city center with Long Thanh International Airport, located in the neighboring city of Dong Nai. Under the master plan, Lotte Eco Smart City will comprise Grade A office towers, a shopping mall, hospitality facilities and high-end residential apartments built to international standards. Flying cars, humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles often dominate the headlines, but inside the exhibition hall of XPENG, a Chinese technology company known for electric vehicles and robotics, the students found that the real conversation about tomorrow’s cities goes far beyond these high‑tech products. The visit was part of a summer camp held for Chinese and British college students, which started on Monday in Guangzhou. Over 21 days, students from leading institutions on both countries are traveling through Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, to explore how technological innovation intertwines with urban development, social governance and cultural heritage. For many visiting students, the factory tour was their first up-close look at China's rapidly evolving innovation landscape. What they saw, from advanced robotics and electric vehicles to smart manufacturing systems, challenged preconceptions. "I didn't realize flying cars were beyond the sort of concept stage. So that was really cool. You could bring in flying cars or robots into shops and that completely changes the city's dynamic, and also, what people do in the city. Ho Chi Minh City expands global AI partnerships at WEF 2026 VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has expanded its international partnership network in AI, smart infrastructure and other strategic technologies during the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions (AMNC) 2026 in Dalian, China, as part of efforts to strengthen its position as a regional innovation hub. The city's delegation, led by Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Loc Ha, participated in the June 22-26 meeting, joining discussions on green manufacturing, emerging technologies, energy transition, new industrial strategies, global investment trends and cooperation between APEC and ASEAN. Alongside the conference, the city organised a series of investment promotion events and business networking activities that attracted nearly 1,000 participants.
