For most of modern history, economic growth has been tightly coupled with the use of fossil fuels. Cities now house more than half of the world’s population, and that urbanization has come hand-in-hand with ecological degradation, air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions. But now, an assessment of 2,475 of the world’s biggest cities has found that in 80% of them, economic growth is no longer dependent on an increase in fossil-fuel-related emissions. The study, published today in Nature Cities1, used satellite data to measure levels of the greenhouse gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emitted from cities, and compared these data with information on gross domestic product (GDP). The findings indicate that almost 2,000 cities worldwide have implemented green policies that generated economic prosperity while reducing dependencies on fossil fuels. “This research is revealing the importance of cities in addressing twenty-first-century sustainability challenges,” says Michail Fragkias, an applied economist at Boise State University in Idaho, who was not involved in the work. Green cities In their study, Daniel Moran, an environmental economist at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research in Kjeller and his colleagues used satellite data from the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite mission to measure NO2 levels in the troposphere above cities between January 2019 and December 2024. NO2 is produced when fuel is burnt in vehicles, power plants and industrial facilities. Bhopal futuristic 'Algae Tree' goes viral. Internet is impressed Bhopal has installed a new technology called 'algae tree' at Swami Vivekananda Park under the Smart City initiative. The microalgae-based unit will be used to tackle pollution and heat. Bhopal has become the first city in India to install an “Algae Tree”, a futuristic carbon-capturing structure that claims to absorb as much carbon dioxide as 25 full-grown trees while releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. The technology has been installed at Swami Vivekananda Park under the city’s Smart City initiative and is already drawing widespread attention online. As videos and photos of the installation spread across social media, many users have praised the project as a creative response to worsening pollution, urban heat and climate concerns. Developed by Mushroom World Group, the “Algae Tree” works using a microalgae-based system designed to absorb carbon dioxide from surrounding air and convert it into oxygen. According to the company, the project took nearly two years to develop and involved more than 50 researchers, engineers and specialists. What makes the structure stand out is its compact efficiency. The company claims a single unit can absorb nearly 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, roughly equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of around 25 mature trees. Solar panels have also been installed on top of the structure, allowing it to partially operate using renewable energy. Videos of the installation have flooded social media platforms where people praised the initiative and termed it as futuristic. The installation comes at a time when Indian cities are grappling with rising temperatures, worsening air quality and shrinking green cover. Back then, it felt as if the project needed to be monitored because of how it could transform India into a country envied by the world, instead of how it is usually looked at. Now, it appears as if we can finally forget about that ambitious plan and move on, because we have a new accolade to be proud of. A couple of weeks ago, it emerged that 95 of the world’s 100 hottest cities now belong to India. It was framed like a bad thing by those annoying foreign reporters, but I would humbly put forth the suggestion that this is something every patriot should be proud to broadcast. The NIMZ is proposed to be spread around 12,300 acres, of which around 7,000 acres were acquired. It is being established for heavy industries to set up large scale units.

The coming year will see Ahmedabad become home to a big attraction project as Singapore proposes to build a mega indoor AI garden by the Sabarmati Riverfront.
