Instead of relying on police, roadside cameras, or a driver's self-control, future cars could simply refuse to exceed the posted limit. The technology required to make that happen isn't particularly futuristic. Many modern vehicles already have GPS, cameras, digital maps, electronic throttle control, and increasingly sophisticated software capable of changing how a car behaves depending on its location. Geofencing could tie those systems together, creating virtual zones where a vehicle's maximum speed is automatically restricted. Drive past a school, enter a residential neighborhood, or move through a pedestrian-heavy city center, and the car could electronically prevent you from accelerating beyond the local limit. For now, compulsory geofenced speed limiting remains largely theoretical for privately owned passenger vehicles. The bigger obstacle may ultimately be political and public acceptance rather than whether automakers can actually build it. Your Car May Already Have Most Of The Technology Geofencing uses location data to determine when a vehicle has entered or left a predefined geographical area. Once inside that boundary, onboard software can automatically change certain vehicle settings. Applied to speeding, the concept is relatively straightforward. The latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that among all new car registrations in July - a proxy for sales - battery electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 26% of the market. It is a major milestone for the country; the Government aims to make 30% of the entire national fleet electric by 2030. Currently, only 4% of all cars on Irish roads are fully electric. "The mainstream population is becoming much more familiar with EVs and much more comfortable with the idea of having one," Mr Faughnan said. He believes that "range anxiety" - which refers to the fear that a battery charge won't be sufficient to complete a journey - and worries about resale value are now less of a concern for many buyers. As utilities and municipalities deploy millions of IoT devices, security is becoming just as important as coverage, battery life and cost. Here are five security capabilities organisations should demand from their IoT network infrastructure. 1. Strong device authentication The first security consideration is how devices are added to a network. Currently, several IoT network technologies rely on pre-shared keys. Although this may sound secure, since in principle only the device vendor holds them, it creates a serious vulnerability. If a key falls into the wrong hands, whoever holds it can simply join the network. Instead, utilities and cities need true device authentication, the equivalent of a passport and a visa. Each device should carry its own “passport” (identity) and “visa” (permission to access the network). Organisations typically implement this using certificates and public key infrastructure (PKI), which also support firmware signing. This becomes even more important as organisations deploy more applications at the Edge. Devices must be able to verify that any software running on them is authorised, helping maintain the integrity of the wider network. Key Rotation The second requirement is encrypting messages in transit. As with device authentication, any technology using a single pre-shared key is at risk. Regular key rotation limits the amount of encrypted traffic exposed to any one key and reduces the opportunity for attackers to decrypt captured data. 2. Scalable security monitoring Scalability and visibility are other critical aspects to consider when managing very large networks. A survey conducted by satellite communications company Viasat and the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) has found that 76% of drivers experience signal loss while on the road every week, while a similar number (75%) would be willing to pay for in-car connectivity. The survey results, published in a new report, NTN in Automotive, found that some drivers said they spend more than four hours a week on the road without signal. Geography has a significant impact however. For example, 66% of Indonesian drivers said they spend at least an hour per week without signal, which is double the figure recorded in France. Drivers in India and Brazil also experienced similar challenges and this correlates with willingness to pay for satellite-based connectivity, with those three countries leading the way, according to Viasat’s study. The study covered 10 markets – Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US – and included 1,606 respondents, who were all current car owners or held a lease to a vehicle. The ability to make emergency calls was the connectivity capability most important to the surveyed drivers, followed by local hazard and traffic information, with infotainment ranking third.
