International IEEE conference brings connected vehicle researchers to Montreal
Researchers from academia and industry gathered in Montreal from June 8 to 10 for the 2026 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (IEEE VNC), an international event focused on wireless communications and networking for connected and automated vehicles.
Professor Sandra Céspedes served as General Co-Chair alongside Takamasa Higuchi of Toyota InfoTech Japan. Professors Jun Yan and Anjali Awasthi also contributed to the organizing committee, while graduate students from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering volunteered throughout the conference.
The conference welcomed nearly 80 participants from around the world, who presented papers, posters and demonstrations on wireless communications and networking research for connected and automated vehicles, including applications that support safer transportation systems for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
The conference was held at the Warwick Le Crystal Montreal and Concordia University.

Christopher Cabaldon, arguing the measure would delay protections intended to shield domestic violence survivors from being tracked through connected vehicle technology. According to the Consumer Federation of California, SB 719 would postpone by five years a California requirement scheduled to take effect July 1 that requires automobile manufacturers to provide ways for drivers to terminate remote access to connected vehicle services used to track their movements. Consumer advocates said the legislation, which was substantially rewritten earlier this month, would delay implementation of safeguards designed to prevent abusers from using vehicle technology to locate and monitor survivors attempting to escape abusive situations. “In the dark of night and at the last minute, the auto industry is working overtime to avoid helping protect victims of domestic violence and those at risk of domestic violence,” said Robert Herrell, executive director of the Consumer Federation of California. “This despicable action will put women at risk of harm, period,” Herrell added. “This is happening because the auto industry wants to delay innovation to protect women. We oppose this last-minute bill.” The legislation at the center of the controversy is SB 719, authored by Cabaldon, a Yolo County Democrat. According to the Consumer Federation of California, the bill was “gutted and amended” on June 10, replacing its previous focus on artificial intelligence reforms with language affecting connected vehicle privacy protections. The 8 projects at the core of Smart Columbus Columbus set out to test more than a dozen ideas when it won the Smart Cities challenge in 2016. But not all of those ideas made it to the finish line. Over the course of the program, the city scaled back, revised or altogether dropped projects as various challenges emerged, ultimately focusing on eight core initiatives detailed in a June 2021 report to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Here's a look at those eight projects that came to define the Smart Columbus program, according to its summary report. A data backbone The Smart Columbus Operating System (SCOS) was designed as a centralized platform to collect, manage and share transportation data across city systems. Built using open-source code, it aimed to give agencies, researchers and developers a way to analyze real-time information related to transit. The system ultimately aggregated more than 2,000 datasets and enabled a data-sharing platform Columbus previously lacked. Cars that can communicate The Connected Vehicle Environment (CVE) project was a pilot program that used wireless technology to allow vehicles and traffic infrastructure to "talk" to each other. The goal was to improve safety and traffic flow by sending alerts about hazards like red lights or sudden braking, while also enabling signals to prioritize emergency responders. Bi-directional charging, or V2X (vehicle-to-everything), is the ability of an electric vehicle to not only receive energy from the grid but also send it back out. That can mean powering your home during an outage (V2H), feeding electricity back to the grid during peak demand (V2G), or running equipment directly from the bike’s battery (V2L). The technology exists. The infrastructure is catching up. The question for the electric motorcycle world is: when does this become real for us? The battery size problem, and why it’s not a dealbreaker Here is the honest picture: electric motorcycles carry small batteries compared to cars. A Zero SR/F carries a capacitiy from 17.3 kWh. A Stark Varg MX sits at 6 kWh. On paper, that looks like a non-starter for powering a house. Meanwhile there’s a lot of advertising for (large and expensive) home batteries. But if you really want to economically and practically benefit from a home battery (and solar panels), it’s best to choose one that can cover at least your evening/night consumption. North America's used-EV market is expanding, and that growth cuts against one of the oldest warnings about electric cars. The acceleration of those sales is hard to reconcile with the notion that older EV batteries are viewed as imminent failures by shoppers. What's happening? Over the past year, the secondhand EV market has grown on both sides of the border. According to a Reddit post that garnered recent attention, sales rose 27% in the United States and more than half as much in Canada — verified as 27.7% in the U.S. per Cox and as 16% in Canada per the Toronto Star. Three people were taken into police custody following a violent dispute in Kingsbridge Heights on Saturday morning that left one man injured and a vehicle heavily damaged, according to police.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. outside 2667 Kingsbridge Terr. and involved two men and a woman who knew each other, police said.
Authorities say one of the men was struck in the head with a metal pole during the altercation.
A vehicle connected to the dispute sustained significant damage. The vehicle's rear driver-side window was punctured, while the windshield and driver-side window were shattered. The damaged vehicle was later towed from the scene.
Police sources said the metal pole used in the assault came from the damaged vehicle.
Neighbors told News 12 they were familiar with the individuals involved and said disputes between the couple had been heard in the area before. However, they said they had never witnessed a confrontation escalate to this level.
Police said all three individuals were taken into custody and questioned following the incident.
