The 2027 EV3 starts at $29,890, making it not only Kia’s most affordable EV, but one of America’s most affordable electric vehicles. Kia announced on Thursday that the refreshed 2027 Niro has the same starting price of $29,890. Although the 2026 model is available in fully electric (EV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and traditional hybrid (HEV) powertrains, Kia confirmed earlier this year that the 2027 Niro will be sold exclusively as a hybrid. Jung Won-jung, vice president of Kia Corp, said the Niro was “Kia’s first step toward an electrified future” during a media briefing (via The Korea Herald) for the refreshed Niro Hybrid in March. With more advanced, dedicated EVs, like the EV3 now on sale, the all-electric Niro is no longer needed. The 2027 Kia EV3 is available in five trims: Light, Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT, with two battery packs. The standard EV3 Light FWD, starting at $29,890, is powered by a 58.3 kWh battery with an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 221 miles. Volvo Cars is launching an over-the-air update for its Volvo Connected Safety suite for select electric vehicles that will provide a host of new warnings, including spatial audio support in some models. Volvo EX90, ES90 and EX60 EV drivers will now be able to send four new safety alert messeges to other vehicles, as well as receive them, the automaker said in its Aug. 26 release. The alerts include large animal detection on the road ahead, the presence of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, as well as roadwork and accident alerts using real-time data from connected Volvo vehicles or traffic management centers. The features expand the system’s ability to provide clear early warnings, especially in low-visibility conditions, such as winding roads or poor weather, and complement existing alerts of slippery roads and poor light conditions. The new connected safety features will be available for Volvo EV drivers in Europe, U.S. and Canada, but the timing of the update may vary depending on the model. Currently, more than 1 million Volvo vehicles have connected safety technology activated. China has launched a 1-year campaign to improve automotive product quality, expanding oversight of intelligent connected vehicle safety and production conformity. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued a notice announcing the campaign on Thursday, state broadcaster CCTV reported. The campaign to improve the production conformity and quality of road motor vehicle products will be carried out nationwide. Inspections will focus on areas including intelligent connected vehicle safety capabilities, companies' design, development and production capabilities, and product conformity. China has launched a yearlong nationwide campaign to improve the quality and safety of intelligent connected vehicles, jointly announced 27 August by various government agencies including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Ministry of Public Security. Inspections will be conducted by state officials, covering connected-vehicle safety capabilities, automaker design and production processes, and whether finished products actually conform to what was approved for market access. The campaign builds on an existing MIIT inspection programme launched in May, under which regulators can pull sample vehicles and components directly from factories and dealerships, seal their hardware and software configurations, and send them for independent testing. These tests encompassed a range of criteria including crash safety, vehicle safety and battery-pack integrity. Companies found not to be complying can be publicly named, have their products suspended from MIIT’s approved catalogue—a necessity for local sales—or be outright barred from filing new models altogether. A central target is the practice of shipping new software features before they are fully validated and patching problems afterward through over-the-air (OTA) updates. Once a sample vehicle’s configuration is sealed for testing, automakers are now prohibited from altering its technical parameters via OTA. This closes an option that regulators have clearly identigied as a compliance loophole, rather than ordinary software development. Volvo just turned a million cars into one shared hazard network The car ahead of you can now tell you what it just saw Volvo has begun rolling out a free over-the-air update that turns its newest electric models into hazard reporters. When an EX60 picks up a deer at the edge of an unlit road, or an EX90 slows for a lane closure, the position of that hazard goes to the cloud and reappears on the screen of a car still minutes away from the same corner. It is a modest update carrying a large idea. Volvo says more than a million of its cars worldwide already have connected safety switched on, and that number is the whole argument: a warning network is worth almost nothing on launch day and a great deal once enough cars are quietly feeding it. Four warnings you never had to spot yourself The update adds four alerts. Large Animal Alert flags a deer or comparable animal on or beside the carriageway. Vulnerable Road User Alert warns of pedestrians and cyclists ahead, which matters most on the fast rural roads where nobody expects them. Roadwork Alert marks live construction zones. Accident Ahead Alert passes on a crash spotted by a car in front or reported by a traffic management centre. Through an integration with data aggregator High Mobility, and by leveraging its own middleware platform flespi, Wialon now allows partners and users to access telematics data for both passenger and commercial vehicles without fitting any aftermarket hardware, ensuring fleets keep full control over their own data. By building a reliable data flow from OEM equipment via High Mobility and flespi, Wialon gives fleet owners native, unrestricted access to vehicle data without a single wire being installed or a warranty being put at risk. Federal securities regulators issued a proposal on updated cryptocurrency custody rules for investment advisors. Hyundai Confirms Santa Fe EREV Plug-in Hybrid for 2027 US Launch Hyundai has locked it in. The automaker confirmed the launch window and core specifications for its first extended-range electric vehicle, the 2027 Santa Fe EREV, during its 2026 CEO Investor Day. But robots are not often, if ever, spotted on the bikeway. So where did this sign come from, and what’s its purpose? There is one clue as to where the sign came from. On the back of the sign, a sticker reads “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs.” More on that later. But the Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee, responsible for putting up the signs along the bikeway, said the sign’s origins are unknown. Betty Gau, chair of the committee, said she first noticed the sign this spring and alerted the other committee members of its existence in an email on May 25. The committee opted to keep the sign up because they found it to “be amusing and clever and harmless,” Gau said. They ask everyone using the bikeway to stay to the right, she said, so it’s “sending the right message.” “The bikeway is for everyone, there’s a variety of users from tricyclists to walkers to runners, we want everyone to be safe, even robots, they should stay to the right too,” Gau said. So what of that “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs” sticker affixed to the back of the sign? Well, it seems in addition to the road sign, the department also has a remarkably elaborate website. With tabs for unit registration, economic impact, incident reports, signage compliance, and a contact page, the site has all the markings of an official government website. Deputies said the driver told them he'd been driving westbound on New Prue Road behind a white Jeep Gladiator with a blue handicap placard that kept swerving back and forth across the roadway before it suddenly stopped in the middle of a bridge located near Osage. Authorities said the victim told them he was concerned about the Jeep's driver, so he stopped and asked if the other driver needed help. Investigators said the Jeep's driver lowered his window before brandishing a gun and yelling at the victim. Deputies said the victim quickly took off and began driving westbound toward Osage as he attempted to call 911. As he drove, law enforcement said the victim reported seeing the Jeep Gladiator following right behind him before he heard two gunshots go off. Authorities said one of the shots entered the car's rear window and hit the dashboard area on the passenger's side. Deputies said the victim's left arm was injured, likely by debris or shrapnel. Law enforcement said the deputies who responded to the victim's call documented his injury, the damage to his car and found a spent projectile on the floorboard of the driver's side. 'Contrary To Law' Polestar Still Doesn't Understand Why It's Banned From Selling Cars In The U.S. But Volvo Isn't When it was announced that Polestar would be forced to pack up shop and leave the U.S. market, it came as a shock to many, including Polestar itself. Two months after the Swedish-Chinese automaker was told to get out, it sent a letter to its nearly three-dozen dealerships saying it was caught off guard by the U.S. government's June 24 decision, and it doesn't understand why its sister company, Volvo, isn't being treated in the same manner. In an August 18 letter to dealers seen by The Wall Street Journal, Polestar said it still doesn't have an explanation for why it must cease its U.S. sales, while Volvo is allowed to continue on even though it sells some vehicles that are nearly identical. The letter also alleged that the U.S. Department of Commerce signaled that the automaker would be allowed to stay in the country. I guess Trump and his boys changed their minds. In the letter, Peter Wexler, Polestar's U.S. head of product, retail network and government affairs, said, "We are currently focusing on getting the attention of [the Commerce Department] to obtain the requested information and to understand the underlying basis for the denial." Polestar's ban is part of a wider crackdown on Chinese vehicle tech aimed at preventing China from spying on Americans with connected-vehicle technology, something we've reported on in the past, typed up on our Chinese-made laptops that you've undoubtedly read on your Chinese-made phones.
