China has issued a new mandatory national standard on vehicle exterior dimensions, easing protrusion limits for smart-vehicle components such as radar, cameras and V2X antennas. The change will give automakers more room to install autonomous-driving perception and communication hardware, reducing conflicts between new technologies and traditional vehicle-dimension rules. China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said on Monday that it had approved the mandatory national standard GB 1589-2026. The standard sets limits on the exterior dimensions, axle loads and masses of motor vehicles, trailers and combination vehicles. It will take effect on July 1, 2027. The new rules establish dimension exemptions for sensing and communication components such as radar, cameras and V2X antennas to accommodate blind-spot monitoring, autonomous-driving perception and vehicle-road coordination. The components can also be used for beyond-line-of-sight safety communications. The revision does not amount to a blanket increase in vehicle length and width limits, but instead provides targeted exemptions for specific smart-vehicle hardware. The new standard also creates more structural design room for commercial new energy vehicles (NEVs). For single axles fitted with single tires on each side, the maximum permissible axle load will rise from 7,000 kilograms to 8,000 kilograms. The regulator said the adjustment would help alleviate front-axle overloading caused by concentrated battery loads and give commercial NEVs greater flexibility in axle-load distribution and structural layout. The rules also define streamlined semi-trailer tractors and streamlined articulated vehicles for the first time, setting the length limit for the latter at 18.1 meters to support the development of low-drag vehicles. A number of headlines have made a big deal out of Lucid’s recall of 27k vehicles for an apparent fire risk. But the problem had to do with an electronic fuse controlling LED lights, and a software update distributed last month already fixed the overheating issue. A long as Electrek has existed, media has loved to make a big deal out of any time the word “fire” is mentioned anywhere near an electric car. Despite that gas cars catch fire at a drastically higher rate than EVs, media pays inordinate attention to single anomalous incidents with EVs and completely ignores the 200,000 gas car fires in the US per year. And so, here we are again, with Lucid issuing a recall, labeled “Fire Risk Warning,” for 27,185 Lucid Air vehicles from model year 2022-2026. The recall is accompanied by a warning for owners to park outside until the fix can be applied. And of course, most headlines are going with that – Lucids have a fire risk, you better park outside because oooh, these newfangled devices are just sooo scawwy. It’s a problem with exterior lights, nothing EV-related But the problem probably isn’t what you think it is. What Lucid found is that the software for low-voltage exterior lighting – which is to say, exterior LEDs – didn’t properly protect against overcurrent. In certain situations, too much current can be sent to the LEDs, which could cause overheating, which could then result in smoldering/smoking or potentially fire. The lighting current is controlled by an “eFuse,” rather than a traditional automotive fuse, which means that it can be controlled by software. So… you can just fix it with a software update. Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg wants the country's auto industry to think beyond exporting finished cars. His argument is that the next step should be exporting the platforms, software, engineering, components and complete mobility systems that sit behind those cars. That sounds abstract until you look at what Hyundai already exports from here. The company shipped 1,90,125 vehicles in FY2025-26, up 16.4 per cent year on year. In July 2026 alone, exports reached 21,150 units, up 31.4 per cent and the company's highest monthly export figure in more than 100 months. Hyundai says it has cumulatively exported more than 3.9 million vehicles from India to about 150 countries. A modern car is no longer only an engine, gearbox and body assembled in a factory. A vehicle platform can include the basic architecture, electrical and electronic systems, battery layout, power electronics, software, connected services, testing methods and the engineering knowledge required to adapt all of that to different markets. Hyundai's own cars show how much of the value has moved into these systems. Its Bluelink connected-car ecosystem is powered by about 1.2 million lines of code. More than 8 lakh connected Hyundai cars are already on the road, and connected technology now reaches about 20 per cent of its portfolio, compared with roughly 4 per cent when Bluelink arrived in 2019. The software supports more than 70 connected functions and over 450 voice commands across five languages. Hyundai has also moved from basic remote functions to over-the-air map updates and controller OTA updates through its newer Connected Car Navigation Cockpit. Security Company Says Hackers Are Turning Car Infotainment Systems Into Botnets Modern infotainment systems increasingly resemble connected computers, and that also means they can attract the same kinds of threats. Security researchers have now documented malware being distributed to certain Android-based car head units in the wild. According to Kaspersky, the malware was discovered in June 2026 and represents the first documented case of malicious software being delivered to automotive head units through an automatic firmware-update service. Unlike many previous automotive cybersecurity stories, this was not simply a controlled security experiment. The campaign targets infotainment systems running software developed by Chinese company DoFun, which Kaspersky says provides firmware, applications, and cloud services for Android-based head units. The company serves more than 30 million vehicle owners worldwide, although Kaspersky did not suggest that every one of those devices was affected. The malware is primarily designed to exploit the infotainment system's computing power and internet connection. Researchers linked the campaign to ad fraud and a proxy botnet, effectively turning compromised car head units into remotely controlled internet-connected devices. The Malware Arrived Through A Legitimate Update App Kaspersky says attackers exploited TWCore, a legitimate system application responsible for delivering software to DoFun-based head units. Under normal circumstances, the app connects to the developer's cloud infrastructure to download updates or install software. Attackers used that mechanism to install a Trojan dropper called JarService without requiring any action from the driver. JarService contains encrypted code that launches another stage of the infection and connects with the attackers' command-and-control infrastructure. The malware can then retrieve and execute additional payloads. One of those is a so-called clicker, which can generate fraudulent advertising activity by opening web pages and making HTTP requests. In a tweet, he says it's pretty much inevitable: All cars will have Starlink in the future. It's the only way to get super high bandwidth to billions of vehicles. Let's come back to Earth for a moment to see where this is coming from. On July 20, Tesla confirmed that the autonomous taxi that looks like poop from a butt would include a Starlink dish built into its roof, according to Teslarati. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's head of AI, clarified that the Cybercab still handles its self-driving tasks internally, and the data connection was there for navigation, customer service, and fleet management. Musk added that customers could also use it to watch 4K streaming video during their trips. By July 22, Musk said that Starlink would come not only with the Cybercab, but all of Tesla's models. While aftermarket CNG conversions are not new, with the rise in fuel prices, there has been a noticeable spike in interest surrounding them. Although there are more factory-fitted CNG cars on the market than ever before, several models still do not give you the option. Not to mention, existing car owners are increasingly looking to convert their cars to CNG to reduce running costs. Naturally, this increased interest brings up several questions about the technology, the installation, the legalities and more. We thus teamed up with Lovato CNG’s authorised distributor in Maharashtra, Blue Drive Traders, as well as Lets Go CNG and its authorised installer in Mumbai, M.S Motors, to answer questions about CNG conversions. Know your CNG kit There are three broad types of kits available on the market today. The oldest is the Venturi type, typically used for cars that are Bharat Stage 3-compatible and older. These use a Venturi mixer, similar to a carburettor, that mixes CNG with air before it is injected into the intake manifold. They are the most affordable, usually costing between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, including installation and registration, but they are not the most efficient and bring a significant drop in performance. Since the cars they are compatible with are also reaching the end of their lifecycle, these kits are gradually being phased out. Modern naturally aspirated MPFI cars require a sequential type kit. These use individual injectors that inject CNG directly into the intake manifold and feature their own ECU that controls timing, volume and other parameters based on RPM and driver inputs. These are much more fuel-efficient, and the drop in performance is nominal in everyday driving conditions. They were collecting continuous driving data like exactly when you start and stop your trip, every time you brake hard or accelerate fast, if you drive over 80 mph, and even if you and your passenger wear seatbelt or not. This sounds suspicious… I always thought this OnStar thing was just for emergency if you get in accident. But the lawsuit says GM turned it into a big data business. The worst part is how they get people to agree at a dealership. When you buy the car, the dealer gives you screen to tap. If a customer tries to tap “I decline”, the screen shows big warning message. Bluetooth Or Wi-Fi: How Does Wireless CarPlay Connect? Wireless CarPlay uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but not for the same job. Bluetooth helps your iPhone and car find each other, pair and reconnect, while Wi-Fi carries the active CarPlay session. Bluetooth starts and reconnects wireless CarPlay During the first wireless setup, Bluetooth pairs the iPhone with the car. The car then gives the iPhone the information it needs to join its Wi-Fi network, and CarPlay starts over that connection. Once the Wi-Fi session is running, the car ends its Bluetooth connection to that iPhone. Bluetooth still has a job on later drives. The car can use the saved Bluetooth pairing to find the iPhone and start the wireless connection again. If a CarPlay session drops and Wi-Fi can't reconnect quickly, Bluetooth can also help reestablish it. There are a couple of ways to complete that initial setup. If your car supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, connecting the iPhone by USB can handle the pairing before the phone offers to connect wirelessly on later drives. If you set it up without a cable, Apple tells users to make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, put the car into wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode and select the vehicle under Settings > General > CarPlay. Wi-Fi carries the active CarPlay session Once CarPlay is running, Wi-Fi takes over the work that matters to the dashboard. Android Auto is a neat way to extend your smartphone to your car's infotainment screen. Maps, messages and more are all accessible once you've hooked up your phone up to your car. The experience is designed to be seamless, so long as your phone and car are actually compatible. What happens if Android Auto isn't working, though? Well, assuming a rare bug isn't the cause, fixing a faulty Android Auto hookup to your car is a pretty easy process. You don't need to a ton of technical know-how to fix the problem, as one of the more common fixes will likely to be all you need to get it working again. Check your cable and connection settings The weak link between your smartphone and your car is the connection, wireless or wired. A single connected car isn’t a safety system. It’s a witness with no one to call. Volvo’s newest software update is really about giving that witness a phone line — and the fact that it took the better part of a decade and roughly a million cars to make the line worth dialing tells you more about where the car business is headed than any deer detector could on its own. What Volvo Actually Shipped Here’s the announcement, stripped of the marketing language: Volvo is pushing an over-the-air update to the EX90, EX60, and ES90 that adds four new hazard alerts to its Connected Safety network. A Large Animal Alert flags deer and moose near the road. A Vulnerable Road User Alert flags pedestrians and cyclists near higher-speed roads. There’s also a Roadwork Alert and an Accident Ahead Alert. None of them require a driver to do anything. Onboard cameras and radar detect the hazard, tag it with GPS coordinates, and upload it to Volvo’s servers. The next connected Volvo headed that direction receives the warning before its driver can see the problem with their own eyes. The Fleet Is the Feature That last detail is the whole story. A car’s sensors are only useful to the car they’re bolted to — right up until an automaker builds a system that turns one car’s radar into every other car’s foresight. Volvo says more than a million of its vehicles now run some version of Connected Safety, and that number matters more than the four new alert categories. A hazard-sharing network is worthless with ten cars on it and genuinely valuable with a million. This is a rare kind of safety feature that improves through math, not metallurgy.
