How a unique competition helped an upcoming driving sim evolve

How a unique competition helped an upcoming driving sim evolve Embryonic sim racing platform, The Last Garage, had a surprise online multiplayer test in public recently as it continues its development. This is as the first title to use its technology, MONOsim, edges towards release. First, a quick reminder. The Last Garage is a work-in-progress driving simulator, using scratch-built physics mixed with open-source elements, such as Godot for graphics. But it isn’t going to be a sim racing title you can buy. Well, not as ‘The Last Garage’ anyway. It’s currently used, in a ‘B2B’ sense, by the Dutch military for driver training, sportscar manufacturer Donkervoort for car development (including a laser-scanned TT Circuit Assen venue) and as a rally driver testing tool. The public will be able to drive it later this year, however, when the new driving game, MONOsim, will be released via Steam, utilising The Last Garage as its basis. Now we’re all up to speed, earlier this week, VCO’s Esports Racing League competition drew to a close, using The Last Garage and its custom VCARUS model. On the face of it, nothing new, the ERL had held an event using the vehicle and sim platform before,in particular at January’s Sim Formula Europe event. That time, however, all drivers were in the same room for a LAN race-off. What made this recent competition different was that the drivers were remote, debuting TLG’s online multiplayer for the very first time. Which wasn’t in the original plan, as an in-person event was meant to be the structure until just one month before the championship-deciding gathering. Oh, and a new track had to be built in that time, too. “I didn’t really have any plans to do [the ERL final] online because I was still working on some elements,” explains

Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: NSX Marks the Spot

This week’s new GT7 Online Time Trial sends the Gr.2 field to one of Japan’s most famous circuits, pairing the category with Fuji International Speedway on Racing Medium tires. It’s a fitting stop, and not just because Fuji suits a field of fast Gr.2 cars… Igor Fraga picked up his second career Super Formula win there just last weekend, continuing his climb from Gran Turismo champion to real-world racing star. On the leaderboard, NSX marks the spot: expect the Honda NSX CONCEPT-GT ’16 to be the car to beat. If you’re after gold, figure on needing something in the region of 1:29.500 or quicker. There’s also a week left on last week’s event, which keeps the Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R ’97 at Kyoto Driving Park’s Yamagiwa Reverse layout on Sports Hard tires. That one closes July 30. GT7 Lap Time Challenge – July 23 - Track: Fuji International Speedway - Car: Gr.2 - Power/Weight/PP Limit: Mid-Speed - Tires: Racing Medium - Settings: Fixed GT7 Lap Time Challenge – July 16 - Track: Kyoto Driving Park – Yamagiwa Reverse - Car: Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R ’97 - Tires: Sports Hard - Settings: Fixed Online Racing Event Want to race this week’s combo instead of chasing it solo? The SNAIL Racing League runs casual online races each week using the active Time Trial’s car and track, and anyone’s welcome to join. Head over to our forums for more information! Accessing Online Time Trials If you’ve not jumped into one of these before, you’ll first need to unlock Sport Mode by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe. From apples to apexes: Premier racing simulation venue in rural Ontario looks to redefine ...

Before learning the correct racing lines and braking points to power around your favourite circuit at Ontario’s new premier racing simulation venue, you must walk among the apple trees. Nestled in the rolling hills and gravel roads of Kimberley, Ont., about 30 minutes southwest of Collingwood, Paddock Motorsports Simulation sits on a former cider-producing farm. The barn housing these high-tech machines looks, at first glance, more suited to a fall wedding than a lap at Le Mans. There is no neon glow through the windows, no arcade soundtrack leaking into the parking area, no obvious hint of the serious motorsport hardware waiting inside. That is part of the trick. Step through the front door and the barn first presents itself as a comfortable lounge, with space for catered meals and a large screen where guests can watch the virtual racing unfold. Despite the racing paraphernalia on display, the environment feels social first, technical second. The machinery is kept out of sight for a moment longer. One level below, however, the mood tightens. Eight Multimatic-built simulators sit in clean formation inside a room spacious enough to hold a dozen or more. Facility owner Scott Maxwell wanted ample space for drivers, coaches, engineers and the occasional gawker to move without tripping over one another. He also wanted a facility that felt less like an arcade and more like a laboratory. While Maxwell eyes driver development as a part of The Paddock’s future, for now, it caters to corporate events, private groups, racing leagues, karting families and track-day drivers. A private, two-hour driving experience for up to eight drivers starts at a flat rate of $750, working out to less than $94 per person. Each additional driver over eight costs an additional $75. Maxwell says when Paddock begins its driver development phase, he

Assetto Corsa Rally Update 0.6: Three New Cars, Throttle Model Under Fire

Update 0.6 brings both new hardware and a public debate about how the sim handles one of its most fundamental systems. Three cars you can’t name yet The third community Q&A for Assetto Corsa Rally, hosted by Supernova Games Studios on their official Discord and streamed by Canard on July 16, 2026, dropped two pieces of news that deserve separate attention: three new four-wheel-drive cars coming in Update 0.6, and a public exchange with Niels Heusinkveld about the game’s throttle model. Zonca confirmed that Update 0.6 will add three new AWD vehicles spanning different decades of rallying history. The lineup includes one French car and two German cars. He was explicit about why he couldn’t name them: until official manufacturer approval is secured, he’s not allowed to say what’s coming. This is standard industry practice, but it also means the community has been operating on speculation for weeks. A French car and two German cars in rally — that’s a solid geographic spread. The French contribution is expected, given the sport’s heritage. The German duo is more interesting, as Germany’s rally presence has historically been more niche than Ittis’s or Fiat’s. If these are real manufacturers and real models, the car roster is taking shape. The car creation pipeline Zonca said each car takes roughly six calendar months from start to finish, involving license acquisition, physical vehicle sourcing, laser scanning, workshop measurements, 3D modeling, damage system development, in-game integration, and final manufacturer approval. Multiple teams are involved across the studio. Six months per car is not fast, but it’s not unreasonable for a sim racing title aiming for accuracy. What’s notable is the emphasis on the approval step — Supernova can’t just model a car and ship it. They need the manufacturer to sign off, which adds a layer of

Luke Browning: Williams reserve driver on his delayed F1 2026 debut and life in Japan

Event Luke Browning: Williams reserve driver on his delayed F1 2026 debut and life in Japan by Josh Suttill 6min read What connects past and present Formula 1 drivers like Michael and Ralf Schumacher, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson, Eddie Irvine and Stoffel Vandoorne? Sign up for a newsletter and we'll make sure you're fully up-to-date in the world of race technology They all headed to Japan to race in Super Formula (or Japan Formula 3000/Formula Nippon as it used to be known), a path Williams F1 reserve driver Luke Browning is now following. Browning was leading the primary F1 feeder series, Formula 2, in mid-2025 when he and Williams were deciding his 2026 programme. Graduating to an F1 race seat in 2026 wasn’t an option, and F2 champions are barred from re-entering the championship for the following year. Browning was in contention throughout 2025 - which meant it was risky to plan a return for him in 2026 - although he ended up finishing fourth overall. Many reserve drivers end up with a programme of supporting an F1 team in the simulator, Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) running and some first practice runs with no actual race programme - but Williams team principal James Vowles was keen for Browning to stay race fit. “I think it was the right decision for us to continue racing,” Browning told Raceteq in an exclusive interview. Browning races for Kondo Racing in a Toyota-powered Super Formula car in 2026 “At the end of the day, we're racing drivers, and if you don't get the pressure of the lights going out every couple of months, I think you might lose that under-pressure feel, which I absolutely am drawn to.” He said it was important “not to have any cobwebs on my racecraft”. From F2 to

Motorsport Games Adopts Poison Pill as Red Oak Stake Nears 11%

Motorsport Games has adopted a one-year poison pill and strengthened its shareholder-meeting rules after investment firm Red Oak Partners rapidly accumulated roughly 11% of the Nasdaq-listed racing-game publisher. The company said its board approved the stockholder rights plan after observing “recent significant accumulations” of its shares and concluding that Motorsport Games’ market price did not reflect the company’s inherent value or long-term prospects. Motorsport Games did not identify the investors that prompted the action and said it was not responding to a specific takeover proposal. Red Oak is the clearest publicly disclosed accumulation, although nothing in the filings establishes that it was the sole, or even primary, reason for the board’s decision. Red Oak and its affiliated funds reported beneficial ownership of 442,644 Motorsport Games shares, representing 10.6% of the company, as of June 30. Subsequent purchases on July 1 and July 2 increased the position to 458,581 shares, or approximately 11% of the outstanding Class A stock. That places the firm relatively close to the rights plan’s 12.5% trigger. Under the plan, Motorsport Games will distribute one preferred-stock purchase right for each outstanding Class A share held as of Aug. 3. If an investor or coordinated group reaches 12.5% beneficial ownership, other stockholders could acquire shares at a substantial discount, diluting the investor that crossed the threshold. Derivative positions can also count toward the calculation. Investors already above 12.5% are grandfathered, but generally cannot acquire additional shares without triggering the plan. The rights expire July 20, 2027, unless the board terminates or redeems them earlier. Motorsport Games also filed a Form 8-A registering the preferred-stock purchase rights under Section 12(b) of the Securities Exchange Act for Nasdaq. That filing implements the rights plan rather than creating an additional defensive mechanism. Red Oak Has an Activist Track Record Red Oak

How Wreckreation 2 is recapturing the spirit of Burnout Paradise

It’s been a turbulent time for Three Fields Entertainment. After years of development and several delays, Wreckreation was released last October to a muted reception. A few months later, the small studio announced it had split from its publisher, THQ Nordic. The situation looked bleak. Facing the risk of redundancies, the studio resorted to Patreon in the hope of securing funding from a community of passionate fans who grew up playing Burnout and continue post-release updates. Some of these players were given early access to updates to provide feedback. Fast forward nine months, and Wreckreation 2 has been announced as a surprise sequel. It’s helmed by the same team as the original, reformed as a new studio: When Tides Turn. “It’s been a rollercoaster,” Studio Head and Executive Producer Fiona Sperry reflected on the last few months in a media briefing. “But it’s been fun. I love working with our players.” Led by Sperry, the team has collectively worked on over 20 arcade driving games, from the Burnout series to Split/Second. Its aim is to “become the leading independent studio serving arcade racing players” and “the brand that defines the genre for the next generation.” “We want to build the games these players have been asking for, which is about returning to the feelings that make arcade racing compelling,” Sperry explained. “It’s all about that feeling of threading through traffic at impossible speed and somehow holding it all together.” However, the developer believes there is still a strong appetite for chaotic arcade racers, which have largely disappeared since Burnout went dormant. “We don’t think the satisfaction for players comes from purely collecting cars or completing checklists. We think it comes from becoming a faster, more skilful and aggressive driver,” said Sperry. With EA holding the rights to the series and
